Land-Ho! After sailing for more than 4 days on a general heading of West-Southwest, and traveling more than 2000 miles, we arrived in Hilo Hawaii today. And the Captain announced that he only had to stop once to ask a fisherman for directions.
We are finally on Hawaiian Time, so it is 5 hour different from St Louis. And with all those extra hours of sleep, somehow we were still kind of tired today. Fortunately we had previously decided to cancel today’s excursion in Hilo, so we basically stayed on the ship and enjoyed the warm sunny weather, and just did restful things – with one exception.
We slept until after they had cleared passengers to go ashore, and then we got up and had a small breakfast from the buffet. Some of Janet’s knitting friends said they were going to go to the Skywalker Lounge for some knitting, so we both went up about 8:30 to wait for them. At 9:00 they had not arrived yet but Janet waited and knitted a little more. Finally she went back to the cabin to watch a movie.
David took the free shuttle to town. Actually it is called the
Walmart Shuttle because that is the only place it goes. There were about 75 people in line so he had to wait for the 2
nd bus. Then the group was driven through the port and past the airport, ending up at Walmart several miles away. You must be asking “why would people go all the way to Hawaii to go to Walmart?” Actually David hoped he would pass a few photogenic places along the way, but that did not happen. We had discovered a couple of things we wished we had brought along on the trip so he was able to get all of them. However a lot of people were buying large supplies of water bottles or sodas, because paying for them on the ship is pretty expensive. Fortunately our beverage package includes all kinds of drinks so we did not need these supplies. David rode the bus back to the terminal and returned about 11:30.
Janet had been watching a movie about Ruth Bader Ginsberg. It was on the TV and was more restful to watch than the other venues earlier in the cruise. Anyway, she enjoyed the movie. While all this was going on, some of the crew had opened the connecting doors between all the balconies and they move from one to the next varnishing our balcony rail – an interesting activity to watch.
At noon we went to the International Café for some sandwiches and pastries for lunch. It was pretty peaceful with most of the people off the ship. After lunch David went to the top deck and took a few photos reflecting some of the immediate scenery around us. There are lots of interesting places to go and things to see on the Big Island, but we were just as happy to relax on-board and store up some energy for the next few days.
We then settled down for an afternoon nap and planned to go to the Elite/Suites reception about 4:00. We got changed for dinner and then David checked the excursion tickets for tomorrow. It turns out that they had rescheduled a morning excursion for David and he would only have 15 minutes following his return before we were both scheduled to leave for an evening excursion. So he went to the office and they said the first trip had been rescheduled by the tour provider – not their fault. If for some reason the first one returned late then it would be my own responsibility to catch up with the second trip. NOT GOOD! They agreed to allow David to exchange his morning trip for something similar but not quite the same. However now he should have plenty of time to return before the 2
nd trip.
We went down to dinner and everyone was there. Janet had the Shrimp Cocktail and David had Gazpacho and a Caesar Salad. Then we both had Grandma’s Famous Coq-au-Vin. David had a Daiquiri before dinner and a glass of wine with dinner. For dessert Janet had Chocolate Ice Cream and David had a Chocolate Coconut concoction.
After dinner Janet went back to the stateroom and David went to the Princess Theater for a Motown singing show. However as he was walking through the Atrium he found the piano/violin duo playing, so he stayed to listen to them instead. Then it was back to our room and settling down for the evening. Good night from Hilo.
