Beer Tasting
Anyone for warm beer? It all went though. Mum ---"God it's hot"
Local Man--- " Itcha cawse youda bein the Deep Souwwth now Ma'am"
Mum ---"pardon?"
Sherrin ----"He says he knows its hot"
Well here it is the last installment with the Mum and Bob (well until next year). After hanging around home and have some valuable rest time I figured it was time to drag them out and about again to see some more of this country. Now when I first got here I figured that all I wanted was a medium sized 2 door sports car that can fit a duffle bag, golf clubs and a 5ft 10.5 Inch driver....think again. After 4 weeks of watching these two vie for the front seat and battle to get in and out of the back seat I was rethinking my decision, although getting quite the giggle watching the show.
Anyway I figured Savannah Georgia was a good place to spend a couple of days and in true American logic we drove 2.5hrs North to get to the "Deep South". The drive was quiet, as I have given them little rest which means quiet car ride and my speedometer isn't scrutinised. We arrived in Savannah after lunch
More Beer
Really gotta love a wet county booze all round ya'll. and hit the hotel which has the interior of an old Southern house. A bit of grandeur across from the river was sure to come in handy. We placed our bags and entered the heat and got ready for another trolley tour. Now when I travel alone these are not my forte but having made them walk about 4 miles in the heat last trip I figure this way is just easier.....After 3 seat changes and my tongue near bleeding due to biting it, we settled in for their introduction to the Deep South.
For those not familiar with Savannah (and wish to be) read the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil or for ease rent the DVD. It pretty well showcases the South and the lifestyle once lived here. The houses are spectacular although most have been transferred into B&Bs or museums. For the ones remaining US 5 million will get you 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms in the historic district. Most of the old wealth here came from cotton farming and the sea port which is the second largest East coast port in the USA. So after 2 hours of learning Forest Gump trivia,
Our New Home
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil seeing a plethora of oversized overpriced, but amazing houses and getting the grand tour in 32C heat Bob and I were *thirsty*. We decided to head to the local Moon River Brewing company and had a tasting tray of their beer. Unimpressed with all 8 ales (one at 10% alcohol which made the next walk more bearable) we decided on cold bottle beer to assist with the next journey.
In the city market we stumbled on more painful trinket shops however putting time limits on perusing meant the next bar was only a block away. Now like Las Vegas, Savannah is a 'wet county' which means you can walk around and drink booze as long as its in a plastic cup. Praising the powers that be we grabbed a beer and sat outside listening to some live Southern soul music. Next we headed down to the River Front for more shitty trinket shops, but pleasantly cheap beer and a cocktail to get Mum into the swing of things. So we sat around and watched the street performers enjoying the Savannah evening. Next day we wandered around looking at what we didn't see on the trolley tour and taking happy
Paddle Boat
Proud Mary? snaps of well...everything.
Their last weekend saw breakfast at an American diner and their introduction to grits. More shopping which saw me frustrated and then some beach time. Their final trip was to Saint Augustine Florida which is the oldest European city in the United States. The area was first visited by Ponce de Leon in 1513 who was searching for the fountain of youth. The city is a tourist town with old cobbled streets and more shitty trinket shops to waste time and look at the same junk, however a deep breath and standing outside seems to work. The day hit 36C and we were out from 1-4pm so it was time to head back and get ready for them to leave for Vegas.
Now its been 4.5 weeks having them here and it has been great. We have had numerous laughs plenty of beer and will never forget the Indians and the Chinese Bus Tour. They walked more then ever, will have seen 10 states by the time they return home and managed to go to a shop EVERY DAMN DAY! The fridge and the washing machine will no doubt sigh with relief and to keep
Riverfront
Down by the river me in my place Bob kicked my ass in racquetball. Watching 2 squash players try and work the game out then watching one get frustrated in losing drew a little crowd. I know the neighbors will miss the Aussies as will I. It was an excellent trip although not hearing a rattling plastic bag, the sound of velcro and shopping everyday can wait another year. All in all having them here was fantastic, so for them until next year, for me next up is ...... well could be anywhere.
