San Francisco
We caught the BART from San Francisco airport to Powell Street. It was simple to find the BART station but the ticket buying machines were a bit confusing. We emerged from the station and it was super busy. It was a mile or so to our AirBnB place in Nob Hill so we decided to walk, which would be fine in a normal city but we didn’t realise how massive the hills are. We reached Nob Hill sweating and exhausted. We had a very exciting evening doing laundry. We felt very American doing laundry in a launderette with rows and rows of washers and dryers. I felt like Rachel from Friends. Then we walked down to Fisherman’s Wharf and had dinner at Bubba Gumps. We ate at Bubba Gumps when we were in Chicago a few years ago and loved it. This time was good but the service was really slow and we didn’t eat until around 10pm. We took a taxi home as we were tired and couldn’t face walking up the hills again.
The next day we went for breakfast at Hollywood café which is rated number 3 on Tripadvisor. The
food was fantastic, Oli had Eggs Benedict and I had French toast with scrambled eggs and ham. Then we hired bikes from Spokes and Hub. The chap we got them from was in a good mood as he gave us two bikes for $20 all day! And they were really good bikes. We biked to the bridge and over it and then biked up to a look out point. It was incredibly windy and we struggled to stay on our feet! Then we biked down to Sausalito, a little town a few kilometres over the bridge. The town was nice but they had signs everywhere saying you couldn’t park your bike, even just perching on your bike not moving was banned! There were loads of signs saying Bike Parking so we followed them only to find a mini car park with bike valet people charging $3 to leave your bike! I got a massive strawberry ice cream and then we took the ferry back to Fisherman’s Wharf. Then we biked to North Beach and round to South Beach to the Giants stadium. Then we returned the bikes and went for a happy hour at a nearby bar where we got
rather merry. Then we went for a Indian and home!
On Tuesday we went for breakfast at Taylor Street Coffee Shop which is near Union Square. It was quite similar to Hollywood café and was really good. We had a look round Macy’s and then took the 5r bus to Golden Gate Park. Walked from the beach end to the top then took the bus back. It’s a nice park but there isn’t much to do in way of shops, the beach is pretty deserted. Back in San Fran we walked up to Coit Tower. We wanted to go up the steps but they said it was elevator only and there was a huge queue so we decided not to go up. We ate at a great place called Sotto Mare Oysteria and Seafood. We were lucky to get a table, the place was busy but the service was great and we enjoyed some lovely sea food. We headed home, purchasing some Haribo on the way and went to bed.
Wednesday was our last full day in San Francisco. We had prebooked Alcatraz tickets a couple of months ago for 10am so we walked
down to Fisherman’s Wharf around 9am. We were a bit late leaving so went in a Jack in the Box to see what breakfast items they had. I ended up getting a portobello mushroom burger which was one of the best burgers I have ever eaten, which may mean I have lived a sheltered life but Oli tried it too and he also said it was one of the best burgers he had had too! So juicy! We took the boat over to Alcatraz while discussing when we could next get another burger. We took the audio tour of Alcatraz which was actually very good for two people who usually hate audio tours. Then in the afternoon we went to Lombard street to take some pictures of the crazy winding street and then I bought a San Fran hoodie. Then it was time for another Jack in the Box burger before an afternoon snooze. In the evening we went to a nearby Thai place which was very good. Final stop is LA!
