Dunna dunna dunna dunna dunna
Our hostel in Eugene had the coolest bed linen Wow, I feel so bad that it will be a miracle if I get through this without throwing up. LA is a mental place, but I'll get to that shortly. We cut across from Eugene to the coast last Weds and caught our first proper glimpse of the Pacific and it was amazing. We parked up and were running about like five year olds (as normal) because it was just breathtaking, we weren't to know that this was nothing compared to what we were going to see. Most people travel down the famous Highway 101 but we looked at the map and decided to go further west and do the road right on the coast, Highway 1. Bit scary, most people know I'm not a good passenger and Greyhead took great delight in driving the car as close to a 1000 feet sheer drop as possible! The road just snakes up and down mountains all the way along. We decided to sleep in the car at a campsite and roasted marshmallows and everything! Not exactly a very good nights sleep but it saved us $40. Got up and travelled about another 300 miles to a place just past Fort Bragg where
1st view of the Pacific
Have you seen my baseball?..... I think they are all related if you know what I mean! Pulled into a campsite quite late and parked up for another amazing nights sleep in the car, there was nobody about and it was supposed to be $25 but we sneaked out at 6 in the morning, kerching! Drove into the 'city' (you're not allowed to call it San Fran or Frisco) about half 8 during rush hour and 6 lanes of solid traffic, crossed the bridge and headed for our hostel. Steve wasn't too impressed with the one way system but we did our best Bullitt impression anyways. Finally got settled in only to find that the hostels 'entertainment' that night was a pub crawl, well, when in San Francisco 😊
Got bikes again, yes twice in two weeks, this is going to kill me. Cycled through town, round the harbour, over the bridge and Golden Gate park, very impressive. Saturday we just chilled out, well needed as it feels like Vancouver was about two months ago. Then on Sunday we organised to go on a tour to Alcatraz which was very cool. We hung out with the sealions at Pier 39 before catching the ferry across
Coast 1
What a view to the island and doing the tour, it was absolutely freezing though. The fog and wind seems to hang over the bridge and bay, it can be 25 degrees in the city and 15 out at Alcatraz, very weird. Monday morning we hired a car to do the Big Sur proper (named after Big Sur State Park which you drive through in case anyone wondered. We were supposed to have a Mustang Convertible but they cocked it up and we had to have a Jeep Cherokee, I proper spat my dummy out but that still didn't help unsurprisingly. We managed to finally get away about two o'clock for a drive that was going to take 8 hours!! (I forgot to mention that we'd got to bed at 5 that morning) Once we were going though the scenery gave us more than enough adrenaline to carry on with, every corner we turned it seemed like the view was better and better. Got to Malibu about 9 and through into our hostel in Hollywood about 10. Our first experience was of the hostel staff about to call the cops when a crack addict was on the patio saying he wasn't going to
Coast 2
Do pictures get much better than this?... leave!! Had half a day of the car left yesterday so we drove through Beverley Hills (awesome houses and flashy cars - the local Budget Car Rental has a Lamborghini for rent, we didn't get it though!) and Bel-Air, drove down Rodeo Drive and then out to Long Beach to see the Queen Mary. Dropped the car at the airport and were told that the cheapest way back to the hostel was on the Subway (which is above gound) but we'd be better off taking a cab. So, we took the subway which as it turns out goes straight through Compton, Watts, South Central. One of the most intimidating experiences of our lives, people were just sat staring at the only two white people on the train as we passed through glorified garden sheds with barbed wire round each of them (didn't find the time to get my camera out funnily enough). Very different, but we did it and still haven't been shot, yet........
P.S. If anyone has any special message requests to be seen on our asses please feel free to send them in 😊
