That we managed to get to the start line was the achievement anything else is a bonus is must be one of the most un prepared runs of all times The last time Philip ran was the marathon three weeks ago. That was the worse thing about running the marathon is took such a tole on his feet and legs its took us two weeks to be ready to run again and then we were flying round oz and jetting over here and the travel caught up and there wasn’t any time. The thing is we have really missed it, the running Philip loves it and we are like a child on Christmas eve waiting for the start. To be fair its not like Philip gave up excersie he swam alot in that period and we did manage a few session in various hotel gyms but he has absolute no idea how this run will go.The plan is to go out a fast as possible and when it catchs up with we should of broke the back and we can stroll home taking pictures of the city.
But he is determined to enjoy it before the marathon we were full
of fear and trepidation 12000 miles from home without anyone knowing what we were up to it but now it just a lovely run on a Sunday morning round a new city to us. What better way is there to see such a beautiful for the first time?
"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco'' Mark Twain
The midst has descending and it is very chilly a big shock after the 90 degrees of LA, Philip MP3 has given up the ghost which actually turns up to be superb as it allows you to drink in the atmosphere and listen as this city starts to come alive. There were two half marathons the first one ran you over the Golden Gate bridge and the second thou the park but not over the bridge we missed registration for the first so cant run the bridge (thanks Natwest)both half marathons follow the route of the full the first one for the first 13 miles and our joins the marathoners in the second half of their race. Which as it turned out was the better run .
It gave you the chance to talk to
and try and motivate people who were struggling to finish the full one and while we were just running a half this time we could have empathy and compassion for anyone doing the 26.2 miles as some are reduces to tears by yet another hill(who knew san Francisco had so many..) we urge and help runners on and we love it. you run down one street that is full of smoke cafe there called here where its legal to see marijuana and the smell hangs heavy in the air so you float along for another mile and before you know it someone tells you there’s only amile left.
Philip is gutted we don’t want it to stop every corner you turn you see something new and we would recommend seeing cities like this to anyone. we finish with a sprint to finish in 2.28 and propelling himself to 2365 out of 3452 the six and seven places he moves up at the end might not sound much but running past people on the way to the line rather than crawling home is a fantastic feeling.
we then stop to cheer home other runners and meet a nice man
who is waiting for his wife to finish the marathon, as time passes and still no sign he becomes more worried and so are we . they start to dismantle the course but people can still run on the pavement but they are threatening to stop that even Philip pleads to let it go on, the clocks ticks on to 7hrs 45mins anyone who can stay out running for that long is hero in my book and then she shows and we cheer widely for a woman we never met she falls into her husband arms and we take pictures for them and hug her and tell her how proud we are to meet her.
As a 13.1 mile hasn’t done too much damage to Philip we walk the six miles back to the hotel exploring fisherman’s wharf and stopping for lunch’s tomorrow that bridge wouldn’t escape us...
