Wednesday 20th August
After making phone calls and getting packed up we headed into San Fran. We found somewhere to park and headed to the hop on hop off bus tour that we had booked the day before. It was a great tour with a Jim Carey style driver/guide who kept us entertained.

Unfortunately the weather was typically foggy when we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and we couldn't even see to the front of the bus let alone the sights. Having done most of the tour we hopped off to walked along fisherman's wharf and found a bar called Specs to sample the local beer Anchor Steam, and then to a very popular restaurant called Nan-Kings. Tourists and locals alike line up outside to get a table at this place.

The owner of the restaurant served us and when he asked for our order and we hesitated a little. He simply said ' I know exactly what to cook for you' he then checked if we liked mushrooms and asked me if liked tofu and Gra if he liked chicken and said 'don't wory I will make you something you will both like'. Gra and I were rather bemused at being told what we should order but nevertheless this guy seemed to know what he was doing and after all it was his restaurant.

When the food came the waitress showed us how to wrap the pancakes to eat and then left us 2 it with chop sticks and several bowls of food. We had salt and pepper mushrooms, tempura fried tofu with ginger and bean sprouts, a yummy veg mixed with black beans and pancakes, Gra had chicken in a peanut honey sauce. All was absolutely delicious and we somehow managed to polish the lot off.

After one more beer we headed out of the city crossing the Golden Gate bridge. It was all lit up and looking back at an amazing San Fran skyline was pretty cool. The hostel we were staying at was situated in Fort Barry and was an old military building converted into a really well ran hostel. Having arrived late we still had washing to do and luckily the receptionist let us get on with it even though it was after hours. At midnight we set our alarms for an early start to catch an Alcatraz tour.
