Wow what a tour Alcatraz was! The National Park Service provides an amazing audio tour narrated by former guards, prisoners, and warden families. We picked up our headsets and audio players shortly after arriving in the prison and it walked us through the prison's history, structure, internal processes, famous occupants, and narration of escape attempts. After a shower they were marched down the center isles of the prison naked to their cells.

There was no privacy, the cells across from each other looked into the other cells. One person per cell kept inside about 20 hours a day.

The Battle of Alcatraz, lasted from May 2 to 4, 1946, was the result of an unsuccessful escape attempt at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Two guards—William A. Miller and Harold Stites—were killed along with three of the inmates. Eleven guards and one uninvolved convict were also injured.

The Warden called in the US Marines to battle the armed prisoners. The marks in the floor came from the grenades dropped through the ceiling. They thought they had killed the prisoners, but once they entered a gunfight broke out.

The June 1962 Alcatraz escape attempt was one of two escape attempts from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in which neither the escapees, nor their bodies, were found. Late on the night of June 11 or early morning of June 12, inmates Clarence Anglin, John Anglin, and Frank Morris tucked heads made out of soap wax resembling their own likenesses into their beds, broke out of the main prison building via an unused utility corridor, and departed Alcatraz Island aboard an improvised inflatable raft to an uncertain fate. When the escapees made it through the vents, this area was used to get to the roof and out of the prison.

Exclusive departure point for Alcatraz. There are a lot of other ferry services that claim Alcatraz in the name, but they can't dock or go onto the island, they just motor around it.
