Today we drove along the Coastal Highway 101 towards San Francisco. The hills and scenery was very dry and brown. The coastline was very rugged and rocky, and every now and then opened out into a bay with large, rugged, golden sandy beaches (such as Monterey Bay). Along the way we saw giant elephant seals and in the carpark there were squirrels sitting on peoples laps and eating peanuts. We stopped at Big Spur campground which was crazy busy with holiday makers and where we managed to get the last site. At $45 USD for a site it was the most expensive so far. The campground was a proper American campground, it was in the forest with pine trees, logs, fire pits and a river.
