In the MekongIn the MekongIn the Mekong

In the rain
Team,
A quick list.
We've eaten some weird animals: crickets, pigs, ducks, chickens, cows, tarantulas, snakes, squid, fish, shrimp, freshwater snails, saltwater snails, scallops, crabs, lobsters and who knows what else.
We've taken all sorts of transportation: long-tail boats, river-boats, taxis, minivans, cyclos (bicycle taxis), tuk-tuks, saengthews (pickup truck taxis) buses, sleeper trains, jumbo jets, elephants, small-horse drawn carriages, party boats, sleeper ferries.
Spent time in four different countries in Southeast Asia (seven including layovers in airports.)
Took three cooking courses in two different countries (lets see if we remember anything.)
Jumped off of rocks, trees and boats into rivers, lakes, waterfalls and oceans.
Tried and enjoyed probably twenty different beers, most of them in Vietnam, home of the 18 cent street-side beer.
Visited plenty of wats and ruins, the highlight being the temples at Angkor.
Saw plenty of monkeys. Monkeys, yes!!!
Learned to trust Lonely Planet only for information on getting in and out of town (the prices in our edition, published three months before our trip, were routinely off by 25-100%. Yikes!)
Trekked in several jungles and mountain valleys.
Fell into rice paddies and slid down slick paths on our butts.
Bought suits (still are waiting for them to arrive.)
Got bit by countless mosquitoes, as well as a few other mystery bugs.
Saw really large, creepy looking spiders.
Learned that mangoes with sticky rice is one of the greatest dishes ever created.
Ate a lot of noodle soup.
Ate at a restaurant Anthony Bourdain recommends. It was great.
Tried a lot of new fruits, many of which we don't know the name of, many of which are hairy or spiky.
Sat on quite a few white sandy beaches.
Got sun-burnt quite a few times.
Ran into a friend from college.
Stayed in bamboo huts in hill-tribe villages.
Explored caves inside limestone Kaarsts.
Developed a taste for Indian food.
Read a few books.
Grew tired of learning about our country bombing or funding rebels inside of countries we weren't at war with.
Got tired of seeing sleazy western men with their prostitutes nearly everywhere we went.
Had a great time.
Met some truly terrible travelers.
Met more incredible, wonderful travelers, thanks to all of you.
Realized just how lucky I am to be with Katie.

Thanks to all of you for reading the blog and helping to make our three and a half month trip in Southeast Asia possible. We are back in the San Francisco Bay Area, Katie is heading to Fargo in a week, I am looking for a job. Our cellphones are back on. Call us up.
Tucker
