Soo our trip is finally here and today was travel day! We woke up at around 5:30am at a travelodge by Heathrow for our flight at 11:30 (this may seem early but Emma's dad was dropping us off at the terminal and had to get to work that morning). We got to the airport at about 7am and bought some (slightly overpriced - damn airport prices) sausage baguettes for breakfast before checking in.
We checked in fairly quickly - bags were thankfully well within the weight limits! - and went through security without a hitch, ending up in the departure lounge around 4 hours before our flight. We walked through a few of the duty free shops and it was here that we spotted our first celebrity of the trip - Lorraine Kelly! Craig heard her before he saw her and pointed her out, we weren't too sure at first as she looked different without all of her TV makeup on, and was loads shorter than we thought; she's tiny! We didn't speak to her as she was talking to some friends but we did take some sneaky paparazzi snaps just for proof!
We then sat down for a
bit and was going to watch some episodes of the new series "Falling Skies" on the netbook but once we started we realised that we were going to be sitting on a plane watching a screen for the next 11 hours so it would probably be best if we had a walk around and stretch our legs while we could! We walked around some more and eventually we were called to our gate to start boarding at around 10:15.
Once on the plane and settled into our seats (which Craig thought were much roomier than other flights we've been on in the past - he could sit down without his knees touching the seat in front!) we took off slightly later than planned at around 12. I won't go into much detail about the flight, it was long and slightly uncomfortable from just sitting there for such a huge length of time, but once we landed we agreed that it wasn't actually that bad (although this may have been because we were so glad to finally be in LA that we had already repressed the memory). The food was quite nice, we had beef stew and mash for dinner,
then various snacks such as a wrap, a sandwich, a cookie, a 'Skinny Dip' (basically 'Skinny Cow's version of a mini milk dipped in chocolate). There was plenty of choice for movies, although we had already watched quite a few of them. Craig watched 'Fast and Furious 5' and 'Source Code' and Emma watched 'Hop' and 'Red Riding Hood'. We also played some of the games and watched some of the TV shows that were on there too. We got a little bit of sleep each but not much really, it was too uncomfortable to sleep in any one position for any length of time! We also flew over Las Vegas and managed to get a pretty decent photo of the strip from 35,000 feet above it!
So we finally landed at 2:55pm LA time (10:55pm in UK time and in our heads). Went through passport control and customs fine and got our bags fairly quickly. We then got the Flyaway bus to Union station, where we bought some weekly passes for the metro before boarding the Red line towards Hollywood, and finally arriving at our first accommodation of our trip - a Travelodge on Sunset Boulevard. We checked
in and went up to our room which is very nice for the price we paid - it has free wifi, a free safe, a fridge, microwave, big TV etc - more than we expected really!
We had a little rest in the room (by this point it was about 6pm, but our bodies were telling us it was 2am) before deciding that we should probably eat or else we would be hungry in the night wanting some breakfast at 1am! We had a walk around and couldn't find anywhere for ages - we couldn't believe that we were in America and couldn't find a Mcdonalds or any sort of fast food place anywhere! We found a Vons (supermarket) and had a walk around, bought a bottle of pop for our fridge in the room and carried on with our hunt for food. Finally we found a small mexican/burger place where Craig had a double cheeseburger and Emma had a chilli burger. One word - amazing. Ridiculously greasy (and there is no way that we could eat stuff like that every day or we literally will come back looking like a couple of whales) but very tasty! With the
little gap in our stomach filled we headed back to the travelodge, and spotted the Hollywood sign in the hills which got us a bit excited, we didn't realise that it was that close to where we were staying! Unfortunately it was getting a bit dark by that point so we didn't get a picture, but we will be heading into Hollywood tomorrow so we will get plenty of photos then!
So we're just in the room now, we'll probably have an early night so that we're up nice and early to go to Hollywood walk of fame in the morning then spend a day at Universal Hollywood. Plus there's the fact that we are ridiculously tired as in our heads it is now almost 5am and we have been awake for almost 24 hours. :/
Just realised that I have written LOADS for a day which has mainly been spent sitting on a plane. I'm not sure that EVERY entry will be this detailed (it's probably just a bit of a novelty at the minute, we've never really kept a blog like this before!), however we will try to update this as often as we can with
what we've been up to, and the pictures that we've taken.
See you all soon! xxx
