We checked out of Venice Beach on 14th Sept 2010 around 10.30AM and made are way to the bus stop! We were both a little tired and still getting use to the time difference and recovering from jet lag. We had to get 2 buses to get to Hollywood, it was quite a hot day and we were both still trying to get our head around America's bus system. Luckily after the first bus a really nice guy helped us out and told us exactly where to get off on the second bus and where to find our hostel. We stayed at USA hostels Hollywood and it seemed really nice, staff were really friendly and they supply you with a lot of information about the area and had a lot of entertainment within the hostel. We definitely would recommend this hostel.
We unpacked and organised our stuff in the room then set off down Hollywood Boulevard. As we walked down the Boulevard all along the pavements were stars with celebs names on. We took lots of photos (as you can see!) including Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze, and Muhammad Ali. We also came across the Kodak Centre (where the Oscars are
filmed) and the Chinese Theatre. Outside the Chinese Theatre were prints of celebs hand and foot prints. When we went through the Kodak Centre we had are first glimpse of the Hollywood Sign. We also saw the Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood but was a bit pricey for a backpackers budget to eat in. We headed back towards our hostel and stopped off at a cafe were we grabbed a drink and rested as we had been walking for around 3 hours. We then later headed back to the hostel and they put on spaghetti bolognese which was yummy!
Day 2 in Hollywood we started off by walking down Sunset Boulevard which runs parallel with Hollywood Boulevard. There wasn't much down there that interested us that much apart from we walked through a filming set for Private Practice (Spin off of Grey's Anatomy), we didn't see any famous people thought 😞 We walked across to Hollywood Boulevard and went to parts we missed the day before and took some more pictures. After lunch back at the hostel we decide to go to Madame Tussauds. It was very good, and very well laid out. The wax models were interactive and we
were allowed to touch and dress up - was a lot of fun! We took a lot of photos as i think its as close as stewart is going to get to his hero's (David Beckham and Leonardo De Caprio) and also mine (Will Smith). After Madame Tussauds we went and had ice cream. I had a massive hot chocolate fudge sundae it was AMAZING! Stewart also had an ice cream cone but it wasn't as big as mine! The hostel put on a BBQ for $6 each all you can eat which was very nice and also had a comedy night in their lounge. The Comedy was Ok but was no Russell Brand, although there was a girl who had a go and she was quite funny. After the comedy it was gone midnight so we headed off to bed.
Day 3 - Disney, California. We both got up and ready around 10.30AM and left the hostel for the bus. We had to get 2 buses and it was going to take at least 2 1/2 hours. On our bus journey we went passed the Staples Centre (were MJ was rehearsing for his tour), Chinatown and also we
saw the ESPN building. The Journey to and from Disney on the bus was very confusing, we both really struggled with the American bus service. We had to get help from bus drivers and do a bit of guess work! We finally got to Disney around 2PM, so we grabbed our tickets and a park map and walked round. The first ride we went on was Indiana Jones - very good others included Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder, Buss Lightyear, Splash Mountain and lots more. Space Mountain was closed so we were both a bit annoyed about that and they were opening a house of horror like the day after but we were still having fun! We went to see Mickey and Minnie's House, Minnie's house was boarded up (she was obviously moving) but we were able to walk through to Mickey's house and we both met Mickey Mouse! 😊 The last ride we went on was Splash Mountain, which was silly as we both got soaked and had like a 2 hour journey back to the hostel. We also popped in a couple of Disney shops and i got a Chocolate Disney cake - was very nice! We
walked towards the exit and the Disney Parade started all the characters were singing and dancing it was very good! We headed to the bus stop and sat for like 20 Mins, we were getting very doubtful that a bus was going to turn up but it finally did. An hour or so in to the journey we got off the bus and had to get on another bus but we had to find the bus stop, again we guessed the way and finally found the right stop and a bus did turn up! We got back to the hostel around midnight both very tired and went straight to bed!
Day 4 - Hollywood Sign. The morning wasn't that exciting we just did some washing - Yes me and Stew did some clothes washing, we both worked out how to use the washing machine 😊 Around 2PM after our washing was done we headed on (another) bus up in the hills towards the Hollywood Sign. As we got off the bus we both thought we were not going to get very close to the sign but as we walked up a long and hilly street we found a park
which had some stunning views of the city and the Hollywood Sign. We walked for ages up the Hollywood Hills looking at the stunning houses and views of the city. We got as close as we could to the Hollywood Sign and took lots of photos! After that we then had to make the long walk down, made longer by us going a different way back. We found our way back though and caught the bus back where randomly we bumped into one of our room-mates on the bus. We both had a really good time and we both think Carol and Ray would of really enjoyed the walks in this area. We headed back to the hostel where we cleaned up and then headed back out for food. We had dinner at Baja on Hollywood Boulevard which is a Mexican - was very nice! We had one last walk down Hollywood Boulevard at night - it was very nice seeing it at night all lit up! We popped into a bar (The Pig n Whistle) before going back to the hostel and packing ready to leave in the morning.
We have both really enjoyed Hollywood, there is a
lot to do and have some really good memories! Next stop San Francisco!
