We are driving on Interstate 10 from New Orleans to Tucson. That means we have to drive through Houston and San Antonio and across the entire state of Texas. We were close to Houston right at evening rush hour so we pulled into a Cracker Barrel for dinner and a place to spend the night. We left our camping spot at Cracker Barrel at 5:30 AM hoping to beat the morning rush hour in Houston. There was still a lot of traffic, but we didn’t get caught in any traffic jams. We got through San Antonio and were well on our way into Texas hill country by early afternoon.
Our next stop was at the Caverns of Sonora and RV Park, about 200 miles west of San Antonio. We arrived 15 minutes before the last guided tour of the day of the caverns. This cave is recognized as one of the most beautiful of all caves in the world. It is a well preserved limestone cave with all its features continuing to grow. It takes 100s of years for stalactites and stalagmites to grow one inch. Some of the stalagmites were over 10 feet high. The tour took about 2
hours and we went underground about 170 feet. Thank you to Larry and Carl for telling us about this place. We enjoyed it very much including the peacocks and guinea fowl.
We were able to make it to El Paso the next day. We stayed at the Road Runner RV park (***) right in El Paso. We only stayed the one night and were off again in the morning.
We have been very lucky about not running into a lot of road construction. We have had “Road Construction Ahead” warnings posted several times in Texas, but never saw any construction. That all changed when we got to New Mexico. There was lots of road construction near Las Cruses, Deming and Lordsburg, NM . It didn’t hold us up too long.
We stopped and spent Thursday afternoon and night at the City if Rocks State Park (****) near Silver City, NM. This is a great place to climb on rocks if that is your “thing”. I know Jonah and Eli would have loved it. You just have to watch out for those rattle snakes. Didn’t see any. I did find a couple of Geocaches. We had a very
private camp site where we watched a beautiful sunset and a gorgeous moon rise. This place is known for being a great place to star gaze, but a full moon made it difficult to see many stars. Karen did see a falling star though.
We spent Friday evening at Catalina State Park (****) near Tuscan. This was our last stop before reaching our winter destination at Desert Gardens RV Park (*****) in Florence, Arizona. Florence is about equal distance between Phoenix and Tucson, about 50 miles from each. Florence is a small rural town that is home to the Arizona State Prison. The closest Wal-Mart is in Coolidge 20 miles away. There is a large shopping area (Home Depot, Target, Staples etc.) in Casa Grande, 30 miles away. They even have a Culvers there so we can get our Butter Burger craving satisfied.
Since we are done traveling we will not be blogging for a while. Feel free to contact us by e-mail, a phone call or come a visit us if you are in the area.

Simply amazing
These pictures are beautiful! I am learning a lot about this country through your travel blog, and it has been fun taking this journey "with you" on the road! I feel I am starting to get the travel bug now. Thanks for sharing (very fine writing, I might add). Happy Holidays! Ann
