We decided to splash out and hire a car for the day to visit the nearby town of Sedona and the red rock formations that surround it. They were very spectacular.
We drove on down to a place called Jerome in the hills, an old mining town which retains its historic feel.
Drove back through Oak Creek Canyon, yet more amazing views.
Then a mad dash across the flat plains east of Flagstaff to the giant Meteor Crater at Winslow. This is the largest and best preserved crater of its kind, however it still cost $15 to see a big hole in the ground and only I went in.
