Well, much time has passed, but at last my second blog entry is here, sure to be jam-packed! When I last left you, I was heading towards Juneau on the wonderful ferry. We arrived in Juneau at the wee hours of the morn, and I managed to shlep my luggage down and cram it into Kathy's truck. I then met up with the Road Scholar crew, and got on their bus to go see the Mendenhall Glacier. It was in the mid 20s, which for Alaska is mighty warm, but I was shivering down to my bones as we took a short walk to look at the spectacular glacier, took the requisite pictures, and loaded back on the bus to head back to the ferry. Kathy had gone on ahead with all of our belongings to ... read more

Where do we begin? Our day started early with pick up at 7am and it was amazing from the first 15 minutes. We saw a mommy moose along the roadside brush. They were 2 of 6. I will post pics but the baby wasn't viewable long enough for me to snap. Today was special because we saw 5 grizzlies, 1 as close as 40 yards. We also had a wolf hop on road and walked towards our bus. Note..there is only 70 wolves in Denali which covers 6.2 million acres. There are only 300 bears here do to lack of vegetation to eat..can u imagine? It takes 400,000 berries a day to sustain a bear. Our bears were eating ground berries in the pics. We even saw 1 bear chase a moose in the tundra. We ... read more

Preface to Rubix Travels Normally a preface would preface. Well, here it is a month and a half after the start of my trip. Perhaps I can call it a delayed preface, or a constipated preface? Most of you are aware of my hyatus from work and from the status quo in Boston, and a little about the trip I'm taking around the world. As my audience, I felt I owed you some kind of explanation, and background. When asked why I'm traveling around the world, the obvious answer is, "WHY NOT!?" Well, that could be enough to set my wheels in motion, but I do actually have a purpose...or at least intention. My intention is to combine my passion for world travel with my quarter life existential crisis. The seed was planted by my dad. ... read more

As I sit wavering in my bed of the MS expedition peering out at the open waters of the Antarctic, I know full well that we wont be making our first scheduled landing on the Continent…lest the 50Naut winds and sleet magically disappear. So, what better time to catch up on my journals? Chapter 2 Into and out of the wild I’ve planned the majority of my travels with the idea of slowing down and capturing the essence of a particular place, activity, or experience. There were, however, a few exceptions; including this, the second leg of my trip. I returned to Montreal for a short visit following my meditation courses, and then flew across the country to Vancouver where I got a taste of the west coast. I also received an education in the art ... read more

Arrived in Denali from Talkeetna this afternoon. Only 2 hours in car which was a welcome break from the 6 hours spent in the car the day before. The gang spent the afternoon browsing the visitor center at the DenaliPark to get the game plan together for the next day before checking into the lodge. When you get away from the town center Denali has a serene feel. We got some really good pictures of Mt McKinley on the way to Denali. The second day in Denali started out with a moose sighting next to our lodge. After capturing some pictures we headed to Denali park to take a hop on hop off bus tour. Cars are only allowed the first 15 miles into the park so the only way to see the whole park is ... read more

The first trail we hiked was called the Savage River Loop Trail. It was roughly a 2 mile walk but we added a bit of a challenge by climbing some of the rocky slopes to get some gorgeous views. During that hike we spot some caribou higher up the slopes. The photographers in the group posed us in various poses to capture some pretty cool photographs. After the hike we wandered over to the Denali kennels to check out the Denali Canine Park Rangers. All the dogs used as part of the ranger program descended from the same line of husky breed. The program is used mostly in the winter months to haul in scientific equipment along with scientists. They also use them to haul out debris and perform rescues when required. Compared to the Iditarod, ... read more

There is an almost rainbow outside my window this morning as I rouse. I don’t know how much rain there was last night but it is drizzling yet this morning. I keep watch on the almost rainbow for it to become a full-fledged rainbow but that never happens. It is beautiful all the same. Breakfast is yet another delight – pancakes, sausage, and fruit on yogurt, coffee, and juice – virtually any benefit of hiking to weight loss is unfortunately offset by the wonderful food served every meal with very generous portions. Kate cooks, Jason serves and they work in succinct harmony accomplishing everything else. It has been my pleasure to get acquainted with them and a delight to partake in their food handiworks. Everything is packed up and I am ready to take on the ... read more

Forgot to mention yesterday that when we went to Denali Park that we didn't get to see Mount McKinley completely. I believe that on most days the top is covered with clouds. We are in Denali and that is 90 miles from Mount McKinley. When we were at Eilson in the Park we were still 30 miles away. They say that on clear days you can see the Mountain from Anchorage which is over 100 miles away. When we got up yesterday, it was 46 degrees but turned into a beautiful sunny travel day in the 60's. This morning it was 58 but was cloudy all day. It has become cooler this evening with a very strong wind. We are staying in a RV park here in Denali, which is really just a few shops, hotels ... read more

We had a long day today but very enjoyable. We took an 8 hour bus trip through part of Denali Park. When you travel on this road, you go between the Alaska Range and the Outer Range. We went from Denali to Eielson which was 66 miles. We could have taken a longer trip for 11 hours and 83 miles. The road on this trip is paved for the first 15 miles. You can drive yourself these first 15 miles. So, if you really want to see much, you need to take the bus. After the first 15 miles, the road is two-lane and gravel. At mile 30, it becomes one lane and gravel. When you start out, the elevation is around 1700 and the highest elevation in the trip is around 4000. So, it is ... read more

The computer systems management for the whole process of visiting Denali National Park may be screwed up, but the actual visit to the park is quite easy. Voytek and I made our way to the transportation centre for our 9:00 shuttle bus that was to go up to the visitor centre at Eielson, some 66 miles into the park. It left a bit late, but that wasn't a problem. Our driver was JJ. He wasn't an interpreter or a ranger. He was just more or less the driver. But he knew a great deal about the park and the animals and was able to answer everyone's questions. He also clearly loved his job and being able to be out in the park everyday. One of the interesting things about the Denali National Park and Preserve is ... read more
