Today is our last full day in Mexico. Ian’s ankle is still sore but better than yesterday. Thank goodness we had anti-inflammatory tablets with us and we wrapped the foot up in the cold towels yesterday. It’s clearly swollen but Ian says not nearly as painful as it was before.
We have a slow start to the day as we want to see whether Ian should be resting up or not. Ian decides we will go out. I go to the supermarket for our breakfast croissants and some bits for a packed lunch and we will go to the ferry for the Isla de Mujeres. One last chance to see the MUSA. On the island we can rent a golf cart and go to a snorkelling beach where three of the MUSA statues are submerged at only 3.5 metres. It means that I will be driving of course...that will make Ian happy!
I return from the supermarket and we have second thoughts. It’s now gone 10am so we really have left it a bit late for the ferry crossing. We decide to try for the glass bottom boat experience instead. The boat runs from the hotel zone and visits
some of the statues submerged in a different area.
We are now at the tourist booth attempting to make reservations for the boat. It would appear that our plans are foiled again. It’s too windy today so the boat has been cancelled. I suspect that might go for the ferry too - either that or it would have made for a very unpleasant crossing!
We decide that it’s probably no bad thing for Ian to be resting up. The last thing that we want is to be denied boarding on the plane. The guy at the hotel has already warned us not to mention Ian’s foot when we check in or he might be subject to a medical examination at the airport!
We go to the pool. It’s in a fairly enclosed space with a glass roofed atrium, but even so the wind is whipping in from the open end. It’s sending ripples through the pool! I had intended to swim my usual mile but I don’t quite make it. Honestly, it’s really quite chilly! Ian sits on the side of the pool to dangle his leg into the cold water and keep count of my lengths.
Meanwhile, the baubles that the hotel staff have just finished putting up around the open quadrangle are being blown in all directions. One of them becomes detached and falls from the fourth floor level, crashing down to reception on the ground floor. The poor guys are sent to take them all down again.
This evening we go to the main street to see the Christmas tree and decorations. Last night there were carols being played outside the church opposite but tonight it’s just the lights.
After crossing the main roundabout - which is no mean feat, especially in the dark and when Ian is still limping - we visit the ADO bus station to purchase tickets for the thirty minute ride to the airport tomorrow. Cancun is Mexico’s second largest airport and we will be leaving from terminal 4. Tickets secured, we go to the food plaza for our final evening meal. This time tomorrow we should be on our way home.
This evening we are sharing a table with a young couple - a Colombian lady with her Mexican friend. We try to hold a decent conversation but it’s very difficult as we are being blasted
by the guy with the loudspeaker again. Ian notes that he is not actually singing, just playing loud music and miming! But there is competition tonight as there is another guy at the opposite end of the food court doing exactly the same thing, plus there is also something going on at the stage behind! It’s a nightmare with all three trying to outshout each other!
