Puebla

PueblaAfter breakfast we left Mexico City and headed to the city of Puebla, by bus. Fortunately, for my vertigo, we are traveling by bus in Mexico, instead of airplanes as we did in Canada. The trip to Puebla normally takes two hours, but because of road work, it took three. We first went to the site of the Cinco de Mayo battle. Now just to clarify, May 5th is NOT Mexico’s independence day. Mexico’s independence day is actually September 16th. Instead, Cinco de Mayo commemerates Mexico winning a battle against the French that took place in Puebla. However, one year later the French defeated Mexico and took power. After checking into our hotel and lunch, we went to a ceramic store to see how ceramic pieces are made. It was really interesting to see the different stages that clay pieces need to go through before being completed. One thing that struck me, was the amount of people working on all the pieces. There is a lot of time and work that goes into each piece, and they are worth every peso. After our tour we headed to an old convent and the Basilica of Santa Monica. I’ve noticed that this city has a strong tie to religious beleif and worship. It was also pointed out that typically Puebla is known for being a very religious and conservative state. Finally we went to the town square and ate churros and hot chocolate. Great way to end the day!
