29th APRIL 2009 - ANOTHER DAY IN PUEBLA!!
I woke up at around 8am. 4 hours sleep yet still functioning...not sure how!! I didn't feel too cracking unsurprisingly but I was looking forward to another busy day. Once ready we went for breakfast downstairs. Teeny tiny bowl of cornflakes which were nice and toast with sweet butter which wasn't so nice!! We also got a brew and some juice. The breakfasts are getting better though I do miss my Special K!!
At around 10am we headed into Puebla. We had decided to visit some of the attractions today as we had wandered around it enough yesterday. Our first job however was to continue the hunt for a journal for Nat. Nothing was open...10am and nothing open!! I had heard of siestas but not lie-ins. We thought maybe 11am was the usual opening time and so took ourselves off to a nearby park to sit and chill in the sun for a while. The park had loads of sprinklers whirling around. To get to a bench without getting soaked was like being on the Crystal Maze. With some careful ducking, running and timings, we got there unscathed!! We sat on the
bench in the sun for around 40 minutes or so watching other people attempt to get past the sprinklers as they strolled through the park. It was pretty funny, especially when someone mistimed it!!
At 11ish we headed back into town as we assumed that things must have opened by now!! We were wrong...it was still like a ghost town. We wondered if Wednesdays were days of rest in Mexico or whether it was just the norm to open late. We headed back to the hostel for a bit to pass some time. At around 12pm we headed out again...surely everything wouldn't be closed now!! It was a bit livelier and things were just starting to open up! Wow...I don't even have lie-ins like that on a weekend!! We went in a nearby church for a look - Santa Domingo De Guzman. Again, the building was impressive from the outside but it was blinged up to the max!! Way too much gold for my liking but impressive in its own way!!
Out of the church we continued the journal hunt walking the same streets as we walked yesterday. We didn’t find one and there was definitely not a
journal street!! Nat eventually gave up the hunt and we headed to the Cathedral to have a look at that. It was pretty similar to the other 2 we had visited...lots of gold and I was getting pretty churched out by this point! There are only so many of the same thing you can go to look at. It was shame though as the churches were the only thing open really besides the shops. All the museums and points of interest were closed by the government due to the swine flu!! Damn those pigs (I am not talking about the government)!!
Following the Cathedral we went for lunch in Cathedral Square. We picked a different restaurant today but it was still very nice. I opted for some fruit and yoghurt which was very tasty and rich in vitamins to ward off any illnesses!! Can never be too careful what with pig flu doing the rounds!! Following lunch we sat in the square in the sun for a while and chilled out. Such a nice place and a nice day. We got pestered by a few sellers and beggars. Two very different sides to Mexico. The place looks quite wealthy
in parts but yet there is a lot of poverty. Not what I expected at all.
As many things were closed the afternoon consisted of roaming the streets some more. I tried to look for some new shoes as my current flipflops were being held together with tape....classy!! No luck though...not even on shoe street!! After wandering some more we sat in the square again for half and hour. Puebla would be a rally nice place to come and work. Vey relaxing and a nice atmosphere.
At around 4.30pm we found an internet shop next to a restaurant. We stood watching the people in the restaurant for a while and they were all dancing around the tables...so cool!! We then went on the net to do our daily blogging before heading back to the hostel where I had a bit of time with Russell (Brand). At 6ish we headed down to the courtyard for some tea and went on the net again. Panic stations at home about Pig Flu...my family were really worried about me. It was weird - apart from a few people wearing masks there didn't seem to be a major panic in Mexico. Must be
the British press blowing things out of proportion again...either that or I walk around with blinkers on! Probably a mixture of the two.
As it got later we headed upstairs and did our own thing for a while. I wrote my journal and lay listening to music for ages as despite being tired I couldn't sleep again. Don't seem to be able to switch my brain off!! Not good....I will be a walking zombie soon!!
