Hey blog readers, we are back!
This year we had decided to go to Greece. Then Croatia, then Equador... then, we traded our valuable Avion points for worthless British Air points, and took a Mexican cooking class. The predictable result is we have decided to visit beautiful Mexico, specically the Oaxaca region. Why, do you ask, have we listed our first location as Puerto Vallarta? Because of the cheap and direct Westjet flights, of course. Also, what would a trip to Mexico be without a day at the beach?
We landed on Saturday, and had no trouble finding a honest cab to our great B and B in central Vallarta, Casa Amorita. It is a relatively new place, built by a New Jersey lady who obviously has a love for indoor/outdoor spaces. It was hosted by her friend Beverley, her daughter, and a sweet old rottweiler, Maya. The humans were nice, but we really liked Maya (we felt right at home). The place was very cosy, roomy and had a pool.. that was good becuase it was HOT! Almost everywhere we went, we were asked "What are you doing here?" Apparenly only honeymooning or old
people visit Puerto out of season.
Sunday we headed to Sayulita, around 75 minutes by bus, which is a beach town. On the bus, we noticed an animated character in funny sunglasses whom everyone seemed to know, dressed in chefs whites and carrying a tray of baking. We didn't think too much of it.
At the beach, we decided we had better try surfing, since the water was bath-warm (to Rob's surprise, as he braced for the inevitable cold the first time he entered the water) and the waves looked gnarly (<2 ft high). We employed the services of Jesse, a nice young guy from Texas, who promptly had us actually surfing. Neither of us actually thought we would get up on the board, but once you achieve a certain speed, the board is very stable. It doesn't hurt that Jesse gives you a huge push just at the right time. Anyway, we had a blast. While we were sitting on the beach, our friend from the bus approached us and offered us one of the "world's best donuts." He went on and on about the care he put into them, even going as
far as sourcing milk from a local farmer for the caramel sauce. Although we were full from lunch, he offered a taste of his caramel sauce, which was heavenly. We were on the verge of a sale when we dropped the bomb -- these we pot donuts! Probably not the best item to consume in a foreign country, right before trying a new watersport.
We did enjoy walking along the boardwalk (with sweat dripping from our chins), and eating local, simply prepared seafood. Who knew octopus could be so tender?? We even avoided being shown a timeshare. The next morning we woke dreadfully early and were off to the airport to our real destination in Mexico, Oaxaca.
