Helllllooooo!!
So back to school, back to school…humbug!! But with tons of new and crazy adventures!! I had 2 weeks off for Easter and then I took another one off….yes!!!
So, I started off bad. To go to Merida....cost me a damn fortune! The air line crashed about 15 days before my flight...errr. So finally I ended up paying 400 bucks for a ticket that was suppose to cost me only 160. Justice? I think not! Rediculous!!
So with 3 weeks off I started off with Merida, deadly hot and humid but wicked cool pyramids (Uxmal and Poc Ruta) around the area, and the houses are super colourful and it had a good youth hostel with a good looking salsa teacher!! Honestly I’m am starting to believe that the best part of traveling is what’s going on in the youth hostels…it can make or break your trip because honestly no one really likes to travel alone and if the youth hostel is cool you’ll meet the BEST people but if not, your screwed for the next few days.
Merida is place to buy hammocks, but don’t be like me cuz I always get screwed and believe everything that people tell me…sooo
gullible. There is this material that they use to make hammocks with that that they still claim to use to get tourist to buy them at prices super expensive…but this material is sooo itchy that you would never want to sleep in it…but even though I knew of this fact before, I still bought into it when I went to buy one…why? Pff who know!
So after that I headed to a place called Valladolit, where there is not much to see but Cenotes (check pics)…sooooo beautiful!! They are just reserves of fresh water in caves under the ground. And I met some French people….side note(I’m gonna get in trouble for this remark …ekk, but it’s a general observation): last night a few friends from Germany, Mexico and Australia realized that the French are loosing a lot of their reputation or adding to it…we get the general feeling of always feeling below the French in their presents…you might ask why? Well from their own point of view everything is better in France….forget about going to Mexico to try the food…its not as good as French food!! But why come travel if all you can say is that there is nothing
History of Yucatan
Its Juarez and the first Metis Govenor of Yucatan who got killed for stopping slavery of the Mayans good in other countries. In Quebec we receive the same criticism as here…ex. How to cut our cheese because in France they do it like this…ahhh!! But its not all French of course that are like this….Julie, Elo, Thomas, Aurore, Greg et Jean je vous aime!!!!hehe!! One thing that is true is that while traveling you always get the best from people and you meet soooo many super interesting and crazy cool people….its definitely one of the best parts!!
So back to traveling…Tulum amazing…no I mean super the best place Ive ever been too beachwise amazing!! Its close to Cancun…. Just a bit to the south, but there are no big hotels on the beach only cabanas and you can string up your hammock. And the beach….oh the beach is beautiful!! Plus you can swim out about 30 mins and arrive at one of the biggest coral reefs in the Caribbean! Snorkeling is amazing there and you can see sooo many different fishes and turtles!!!
Then I checked out some more ruins Chichen Itza and Coba. Chichen is super touristy, but worth it! And Coba is one of the oldest ruins in the area that is cheap to see
and good to get a guide to understand what went on in the Mayan world…but after seeing 8 pyramid sites you can pass on a few!
Then to Palenque, Chiapas where there are sweet ruins in the jungle and some wickedy wack waterfalls. And yes, I saw monkeys and a Tucan!!! We stayed at this place cool place where there were a bunch of cabanas in the jungle and with a restaurant. Every night there were fire flinging shows and live salsa music!! I also did a corny horse ride in the “jungle” which was on ranches that once were the jungle where we saw a whole bunch of dead cows…wow!!!
Then off the San Cristobal, home of the Zapatistas …well Caracol are a bit out of the city, but it played a major part in the 1994 revolution. AND it’s the home base of coffee and chocolate….ohhhh chocolate…ummmm!! And sooo much amber soo cheap!! I hung out with a couple….she was from Belgium and he was from Nepal but lived in the States. They were super cool… she is 24 and has opened up an orphanage in Nepal, which is amazing and he is a raft guide in Colorado!!
They were really super interesting and soooo much fun to hang out with! During the time that we were in San Cristobal a huge problem was arising in Nepal with the 20 day strike to protest against the king who has taken all the power the country. Tons of people have been killed and the prices for commodities have gone up the roof. So to smooth down the mood we decided to go venture and ended up going to a canyon…huge with crocodiles and funky birds, but on the way we realized that we didn’t have enough gas….ahhh…so we hitched hiked…in Mexico! We also went to another little village around San Cristobal where they have allowed tour buses to go through to see a typical village in Mexico. The reason they do this is because in many areas indigenous people believe that if you take pictures of them you are taking away part of their spirit…so it gets touchy. In this village they are super religious but they have integrated the mayan religion and the catholic religion…so they practice the religion on the ground grouped up with family and put out candles while praying to a prophet or God. It’s
Hut!!
Its a funky set up in there!! Its a replica of what the Mayans lived in!! very unique and beautiful to see and for me, I was glad that they preserved that part of their culture!
So next stop what in Oaxaca. I ate grasshoppers…lots of them!! Oaxaca is super known for its Mexcal…that alcohol with the wormy thing in it. I found a sweet bar where you could test out 60 types so Im officially no longer allergic to alcohol (insider)!!
Then I went to go see Matty boy in Mexico city…its not that bad of a place!! I actually really liked it!! It’s a bit dirty but there is soooo much to do and see; Frida museum is awesome and downtown is super lively and there is a bunch a really nice areas. But the discrimination is obvious: Whites are rich and the indigenous are poor. You can see it more when you go to a ritzy area most are white people sadly enough. This reality is apparent in all the big cities in Mexico….so much that if you ask an indigenous person where they are originally from they will not reply or simply say from in the city due to shame.
Now I’m back to Guadalajara, where its cool! Classes have started over
again for another month, which isn’t too bad cuz every week here in Mexico, they make up a different holiday so weeks are shorter. This week it was mothers day, so no class and next Monday its teacher day!!! Im going to the beach to learn to surf!!! Hells yeah!!!
Well I hope you are all well!! Sending loads of kisses!!!
Val happy b-day!!!!
Mi oso, te mando muchísimos felicidades por tu premio!!
Avi, thanks for the radio show..and the dedication!!
