Last Saturday, our American neighbour purchased some ground beef. Being American, he sometimes forgets about the metric measurements here. Instead of buying 2 lbs he bought 2 kilos. This, in his mind was a good reason to have a neighbourhood pot luck barbecue. Paul (the American neighbour), provided the burgers and everyone else brought appetizers and salads. The weather was perfect (as it normally is here) and the company was great fun.
On Sunday, Jorge and his wife Alexandria drove to Guadalajara to pick up a new golf cart for us. There is nothing wrong with the old one except that Mary Ann who is an avid golfer decided to buy it as a means of transportation to and around the golf course. The new cart that Jorge purchased for our use is a little larger and very deluxe. It has a full windscreen, wipers, lights, turn indicators and a horn. It reminds me of a Flintstone car. Pictures will come, but for now, it is in the body shop getting repaired and painted a bright Ferrari Red. The cart is a little wider than the bed of Jorge’s pickup truck so it was damaged a little in transportation but
should be available for us next week.
On Monday, we went for a walk. Our first stop was the Monday morning market in San Antonio. It is a very nice but different market. Almost everyone selling things in the market was a Gringo. There were a lot of prepared foods available, nice baked goods and items being sold for charity. One lady, who was Asian, had a table of prepared Asian food even Udon soup makings which is one of my favourites. We bought a nice heavy multigrain loaf of bread but we couldn’t really buy anything else as we were just starting out on our walk.
Next we hopped aboard a bus and went to the far end of Ajijic. We were in search of the post office and headed for the area indicated by a picture of a little envelope on the map. It was a mistake but we enjoyed the walk and found a nice bagel and coffee shop with free wifi. As we walked back towards home, we stopped in small shops and even found another market on a side street. Eventually, we arrived at the post office, a small building that we have
walked by many times.
Now, the test! Today is November 25
th and I have requested that the few cards I am mailing home be sent by airmail. We had an option of mailing these cards through the Mail Box Store but they take all of their mail in a large bundle to the States, put American stamps on the letters and mail them from there with a guarantee that they will be delivered. In my mind, that takes all of the fun out of mailing things. I want these cards to arrive in Canada (maybe) with a Mexican stamp on them. (The cards I mailed from Cuba in September have still not yet arrived in Canada.)
The conversation with the lady in the post office who spoke no English was challenging and fun. Rick was impressed that we worked out the fact that I wanted them sent by air and I wanted them to arrive before Christmas. I think that what she told me was... I could use the regular stamps or we could wait and that she had some special Christmas stamps arriving from Guadalajara in three days. She would keep my envelopes and put the Christmas
stamps on them when they arrived. So I paid for the stamps and left everything in her hands. It will be fun to see if anyone receives their cards.
Next stop was the pharmacy where we ran into our neighbor Paul. He offered us a ride home but it was still early and we were out for a walk.
I have been looking for a hair salon and when we reached the Mayan Spa, Rick was quick to point out that not only did they do hair, they also provided free Margaritas. He was sold! While I had my hair cut he sipped on his Margarita. Friday we are returning and he will have his hair cut as I sip away and have a mani-pedi.
We eventually arrived at the Super Lake store where we bought a few too many groceries to carry the rest of the way home. A quick call to Jorge and he was there to rescue us.
Tuesday, I spent a good portion of the day cooking. In the afternoon we went to the pool a little early for happy hour as we were going with Jorge at 4:30PM in
search of a Christmas tree. Now, the easy way would be to go to Walmart and buy one but that was not for us (according to Jorge). We drove up one of the nearby mountains and then walked along some well worn paths in search of the perfect tree. After walking a while it was determined we were not in a good area. We drove back down the mountain a little way, and came to another area. With machete, hatchet and rope we began another little hike. I found a lovely little tree (maybe not so little) Jorge chopped off a little branch for me. I loved it, even though it is full of thorns. Rick at this point thought that one of the large cacti would make a great Christmas tree. Finally Jorge spotted a tree that he liked, it was on the way back to the truck so the good news was that he didn’t need the chain saw or have to drag or carry it too far. It was loaded into the back of the truck and we headed home.
