O'hare to Mexico City
The route from O'hare International Airport in Chicago, IL to the Mexico City International Airport in Mexico City, Mex. The first country in the amazing travels of Advin and Miguel, is the United States’ southern neighbor, Mexico. We hear stories of immigrants who come from there and how they came for a better opportunity in life. We wanted to see first hand what it is like in the lives of rural Mexico and why the
migration rate(a change in residence intended to be permanent) is the way that it is now. Places like Cancun and Acapulco bring thousands of tourists every year. To us, that is not real Mexico. Here is what real Mexico is like.
We left on July 7th, 2015. Our Aeromexico Airlines flight left at 1:55 am and landed in Mexico at 5:25 am. After arriving, We took a coach bus from the Grupo Pullman de Morelos coach bus company to the city Cuernavaca, in the state of Morelos, Mexico at 6 am. Driving through Mexico City, we can see a very patriotic
cultural landscape (the forms and artifacts sequentially placed on the physical landscape by the activities of various human occupants). The Bald Eagle was a common feature we would see on most of the works. The most notable statue we saw was the Independence
Mexico City to Cuernavaca
This is when we went to Miguel's aunts house in Cuernavaca. Angel. This shows that mexico is Catholic as well proud of their freedom. We could see the
cultural ecology (the multiple interactions between a culture and the natural environment) between the people and the Agave Azul, which is used for Tequila, a staple in Mexico After an hour and ten minute ride, Miguel has an aunt who had a house in Cuernavaca. She and her cab driver, who’s a close friend of hers, picked us up from the bus terminal and took us back to her house. She fed us typical morning breakfast: Pan Dulce, which is homemade sweet bread, and hot coffee. My aunt and I had a nice conversation about my parents and home. At 8:30 am, the cab drive was kind enough to drive us to my uncle’s house who lives in Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico. We arrived at 10:00 am, just in time to meet up with my uncle who was on his way to the corn fields. Corn is a major part of Mexican culture as it is used to make the Mexican staple food: tortillas. In between July and September is crop growing season. That is when Mexico
Cuernavaca to Iguala
The route from Miguel's aunt's house to his uncle's house in Iguala. is hit with the most rainfall. My uncle was going to take Advin and I to meet up with my cousins Rafael and Juvenal in the field. They had been there since 5:00 am. We got to the corn fields which are about 30 minutes away. We said “Buenos Dias” to my cousins and they showed us how to Farm at 10:30 am. We noticed that they had mules that had a plow connected to them via rope. Rafael would steer them in the direction that he would want them to go. He let Advin and I steer the mules. We did so and nearly went flying. Rafael ran and gained control of the mules. Everyone laughed except for Advin and I. My uncle then gave Advin and I sickles to cut any dead plants that would not thrive anymore. We were to make a race out of it, however my uncle told us not to as we would most likely cut ourselves. It was getting hotter and hotter as we were there. We could now see how hard they work and why the dream for most is to come to the United States. My
Iguala to airport
The route from Miguel's uncle's house to The Mexico City airport. uncle took Advin and I back to the house at 1:00 pm, where my uncle has a corral of cows waiting for us. My uncle asked us if we knew how to milk a cow. Excited as he was, Advin ran to one of the cows and reached for the utter. My uncle ran and pulled him out of the way. I laughed at him. My uncle explained to him that there is a process to it and it is not like in the movies. My uncle had ropes. He managed to take one of the calves of one of the mother cows and he showed us how to tie the calf to its mother. That way, the cow thinks it’s its offspring, not a human. We helped my uncle do so to another cow and calf. Then it was challenge time: see who could get the most milk in 10 minutes. Advin could not get a single drop. He even squirted himself in the face at one point. I won the challenge and was was able to squeeze about milk one-third of the metal container full of milk. We were done by 3:00 pm. I took a bath in
a small concrete shower room in the house. There was a large metal bucket with water and a small plastic one to pour it on yourself. After a long day, it was now 4:00 pm: dinner time. I had asked my aunt ahead of time to make the most typical dinner one could think of. So she made homemade tortillas and beans. For the rest of the night, I talked with my uncle and how it feels living in Mexico. He told me the story of when him and my dad came to the US and how my uncle was captured and sent back to Mexico after 5 years of living in the US. He asked me about school, my hobbies and my family. Even to Advin as well, but I translated of course. My uncle then knew a cab driver who drove us all the way back to the airport. It was only about a 2-hour and 20-minute drive. We left at 5:00 pm and arrived at 7:30 pm, just enough time for our flight to Tromso, Norway.
