March 12, 09, Thaddeus and I pulled into Troncones at 5:30 in our rented Nissan, all boards accounted for. Saw a few waves breaking at the Troncones T as we pulled into the little town. A right turn took us to Casa Delfin Sonriente where we had booked a week for this, our first trip. Glen, the owner, checked us in and recommended we surf on the beach out front of the Casa for glass off and so we grabbed our boards and got wet right away. It was a little walled up but we could pull into some hollow corners and every body unwound from the flight and we had the waves and the sunset all to ourselves.
We unpacked, showered, and walked to the closest restaurant, about two hundred yards north, a little family place called Costa Brava. Fish tacos, snapper, shrimp and a twelve year old bar tender.—it rocked. When we got back Glen said he would take us to a local spot for the swell direction and late morning was the best tide. Cool with us because we were lagged and dawn patrol could wait a day.
After a good night’s sleep and some killer pancakes
El Rancho (2)
El Rancho (2) we hopped into Glens Jeep and landed at a reef with some 3-5 foot surf. It was a blast. Glassy rights and lefts plenty of them and a small group of locals that were friendly. No names to protect the innocent but the place was as pretty a spot as you’d ever see. We hung for a while and when the wind turned headed back to the casa. We spent the afternoon in the pool and body surfing out front.. In the afternoon the wind held so instead of surfing we played shoes and drank some beers—a casual day. Street tacos and billiards kept us entertained until we pulled into the sheets early so as to be rested for dawn patrol.
RRRRRRINGGGGG, I’M UP I’M UP outside… stars everywhere. Turn on the coffee. Can hear the surf. Sounds bigger. Glens up listening for the waves and sniffing the wind. Surfers breakfast, out before light., we knew where we wanted to go from some buddies who had scored here before and made us a map.
Mexican army checked us out but no drama - (wouldn’t want to be carrying right then).
We won’t go on and on but it was the place to be over the next four days. What a great wave. The crowds were up and down but there was a lot of room and good size and consistent enough for all to share with minimal fuss. Some sets were double over. There was a little shack doing up huevos rancheros and tacos and the offshore shed till early afternoon. We got four or five hours in each day. Back at the casa siestas and a book at the beach ramada. Later that day We scheduled massages for the next day from a little Mexican lady with fingers like steel-- 25 bucks for each of us—Fidela could hurt you but in a good way. She’s in the book at the Casa. Then we headed into Zihautenejo to get some steaks to BBQ, check out the town and do a little shopping.
Back at the Casa, we unloaded the groceries, fired up the barbecue, mixed up some margaritas and invited a couple ladies (who had checked into the Casa while we were gone) to join us for dinner, which they did. We warned them not to drink more than two of Tad’s margaritas - they didn’t listen.. That night we went out on the beach and waded into the warm water for a dip before bed. Yes, all of us. As we walked back up the sand we ran into this big turtle struggling up the beach to lay her eggs. We all sat a little ways off mesmerized by the effort this creature had to make in order to survive. On our way into the house we told Glen about it and then we went back out to the beach with him to help set up stakes and setup a protective barrier so no dogs or people would disturb the nest before morning. The next day Glen told us that he and his staff had moved the nest and would protect it until the eggs were ready to hatch at which time they would release them into the ocean. The whole thing was pretty cool.
Good waves and good people. No dramas. All in all, we were very stoked with the whole trip and can’t wait to go back.
