A Lolly!
mmmmmmmm! Patience patience people here I am updating, I´ve not forgotten you! I´ve had a bit of a busy week, we had the Becariolympics which were hilarious! First swimming on Tuesday when it became apparent that most of the kids can´t actually swim and mostly just ran slow motion through the water spinning their arms in the manner of a front crawl! The running on Wednesday was slightly less amusing but they all had looks of the most intense concentration on their faces! We missed the finale yesterday because of our trip to Mexico which Luis informed us we would be partaking last week.
Just to clear a couple of things up, Luis and Luisa are a married couple in charge of the Becarios activities in the week, they´re a bit scary looking and it has to be said Luisa looks like Miss Trunchbull and Luis has been referred to by Gappers since time began as "the Beast" and no confusion as to why bt I think they´re starting to like us now and are warming a bit!
Secondly, you may be of the belief that I have in fact been in Mexico for a month now and surely to
The Zona Rosa, Mexico
Home of shoe shops and a Mango! visit it would be a bit strange, but here Mexico is not the country (I can´t remember what they call that) but in fact what we know as Mexico City, or indeed el DF (The Federal District) so off to Mexico we travelled, by combi, taxi, posh first class coach with a TV and a toilet (WOW! Still I wouldn´t recemmend going to the toilet on a coach that´s navigating a mountain motorway at 300mph...I thught I was going to fly out of the window!), the metro (more on that later), another slightly bigger combi and then by foot to the university of the GUAY. What a mighty mighty trek.
We didn´t really have much of an idea what we were meant to be doing there except from talking to an English teacher about something...we still don´t really know as no-one expected us and told us to come back at 1. So we made use of our free time and set off for the Zocalo by metro. The trains are far more like Paris Metro trains than London ones, which is strange as Mexicans are about a foot smaller than English people as a rule. They were quite busy
The Zocalo
Proof we went. but could have been far worse, we were lucky enough to get seats, which I dont really know in retrospect if it was good luck or bad luck. The seats are benches along the sides of the train like in London but unlike in London they´re like a cheapo shopping centre bench crossed with a public urinal and consequently very slippy. Everytime the train accellerated, which it does not do smoothly but in jolts and stops and starts everyone flew towards the back of the train, and when it decellerated, just about overshot their original position to get to know the person next to them a little better!
So the Zocalo really is quite big, enormous indeed, and the buildings around it are quite pretty, but its not very inteersting so we set back off for the GUAY HQ, to be sent away again because the English teacher wasn´t there...what a bummer. Ha ha, we (well I) went shopping! I found a Mango and delariously went a bit crazy, well not too crazy when the 5 things I bought cost less than 30 pounds! How shallow I am! Unfortunately I´m still on a mission to find some nice pumps!!!!
So that´s about it for now, we smuggled my shopping back in the camp in time for the February birthday party with jelly and cake and Mexican style disco afterwards, not much to report on about that apart from Montserrat´s spiffing rainbow skirt, I want one of those now too!
