A Human Cement Mixer
You can do anything with cement in Mexico. Que pax!
During Spring Break this year, I went with my youth group, Christian Student Fellowship, to Saltillo, Mexico, where we helped several churches out by pouring three cement roofs and a floor, digging fence post holes and helping fence off some vacant land next to a church so the establishment can petition the government in a few years to be given ownership, playing lots and lots of futbol with kids, and having a wonderful time worshipping the Lord through service.
Though a long, 30-hour drive from Nebraska to Saltillo (in the state of Coà huila, about an hour and half south of Monterrey), I deepened existing friendships and began new ones. I learned a lot about myself, including the fact that I think I have a desire to go into the missions field, perhaps teaching children English skills. I'm mighty talented at mixing cement by hand, now, and since I have a knack for languages, I picked up quite a bit of Spanish. Though the work we did was grueling, there is a certain joy to be found in physical labor. There is a way the mind can just drift, or even think of nothing at all, while

Sean exhibits how we lived for a week - out of bags and in sleeping bags. And it was glorious. working hard in filthy conditions.
And the Mexican people! My heart has just opened up to them! They were so gracious! When we would be at a worksite, the people of that particular neighborhood would bring us food and their children would play futbol with us on our lunch breaks. Their culture has it right: simplicity and taking joy in one's fellow human beings is truly what life is about.
