There is a certain romance to the road trip. Family members packed into a van travelling through small towns and countryside where you may never travel to again. Mixed in with the mandatory food and bathroom breaks there is a quality to a road trip that is difficult to define.

Currently Jo and I are travelling through Ontario with a final destination of Ottawa with her family and all of their significant others. It’s not like you have a choice of your travel companions when travelling with family but the road trip was almost made for people closest to you. The people that you can road trip with are ones that you can stay in close proximity with (usually in a minivan) for a long period of time.

I think I have been so used to travelling on my own or with Jo that I forgot about one of the things that make this trip so special, the stopping along the way. Today we stopped at Sandbanks National Park, where the kids could play, everyone could cool off in the water and we could just hang out as a family. Most of the time the travel that I do

is mostly business, airports, iPods and, in a word, kind of soulless. No chance of that happening here as every song that is played, every stop that is made and every thing that is said is all done by people you love and will become the memories of Christmases and Thanksgivings back at home.
