Toronto and the Niagara Falls
After a couple more hours on a Greyhound bus I finally arrived in Toronto where my parents already expected me. They finished their trip through Canada and stayed in Toronto with me for one week.
One thing I realized at once: the standard of travelling was quite a bit different. Not only was it suddenly nearly impossible to have breakfast in
the park, but also the hotel was quite a bit more luxurious as I was used to from the youth hostels I stayed at. Well, despite this change and the fact that sometimes it took a little bit longer to find a place to eat, I really enjoyed that week. It was great to talk to them every day again and to tell them so many of the things I’ve experienced since I arrived in Canada.
Toronto definitely is a business city and now I also understand why it’s known as Canada’s New York: very modern, skyscrapers and lightads everywhere, etc. During the week we stayed in Toronto we went to see pretty much everything: Canada’s biggest Chinatown, the CN tower, the island and much more. The view from the CN tower is absolutely breathtaking, but when you are downtown, the tower looks rather small, or at least not that much bigger than the skyscrapers. However if you have a look at the skyline from the island, the tower is huge and the skyscrapers look like small houses.
While we were staying in Toronto, it was Canada Day. But beside the fact that there was a whole lot of people
on the streets and that Canada flags were handed out, I didn’t notice a lot of it. That really surprised me because so far I got to know the Canadians as rather patriotic and as people who never leave out an opportunity to celebrate their country. Well, in the evening there was this huge firework over the lake and therefore it got finally obvious, that it was a special day.
One evening when we returned to the hotel, there were quite a few people standing around the front entrance of the hotel. Furthermore, the police was there and the streets were closed. We eventually learned, that the Queen was expected at the hotel. As we were told that it should “only” take about 45 minutes until her arrival, we decided to wait in the lobby, respectively in the gallery just above it. She arrived more or less on time and after about 10 seconds she was gone again ;-) Well anyway, we saw the Queen :-)
After our week in Toronto it was time to travel on. My parents left Canada and flew home, while I continued my trip to the Niagara Falls. Just before we wanted to leave the
hotel there was no more electricity downtown and therefore the traffic lights didn’t work anymore. But the big chaos didn’t arrive as the businesspeople stood in the middle of the crossing and led the traffic. Therefore I arrived at the bus station in time and after a short bus ride I found myself in Niagara Falls.
After checking in at the hostel I went directly to the falls so that I could have a look at them by night. They are illuminated with different colours and therefore just fascinating. The next day I went to see the falls from as close as possible, which means I took a boat ride with the maid of the mist. The closer I got to the horseshoe falls, the more I could feel the pressure of the water. It was blown straightly towards you and therefore it got quite wet ;-) That was worth the experience! Next, I went behind the falls. Even though I imagined the trail to be longer, I was amazed by the force and the speed of the water coming down. It was even impossible to take pictures of it, because the water is coming down too fast. Last but
not least, I went to see the point where the water comes down, which is at least as fascinating as to see the falls from the front. In once sentence, I was totally amazed by the Niagara Falls.
In the evening I continued to New York :-)
