Fun kayaking!
Lake Okanagan September 11, 2013
A wonderful day today! We stayed around the resort, deciding to invest in the $30 for the unlimited use of kayaks. Good value considering we each took out one sea kayak each and had them for about 3 hours in total.
We’ve taken touring kayaks out on Quatra Island, Canadian canoes out on Dutch Lake in Clearwater and Emerald Lake and now we’re trying out those little sit on sea kayaks on Lake Okanagan. I was initially concerned I have to admit. I’ve seen people on these things before and assumed a slight breeze and they’d be in the water. You’re sitting on top of a piece of plastic after all, not unlike sitting on top of a surf board. How stable can it be?
But of course that wouldn’t make any sense, they’re designed for waves after all, but despite this undisputable fact, perched precariously on top of these things rather than in them, looks incredibly rocky.
Once in (just getting in is a bit traumatic the first time) and I’m still not sure. As soon as one of the boys comes within a metre of me I’m yelling at them (in a

Kayaking on Lake Okanagan slightly panicky way) not to dare touch me!
But reality finally dawns and it doesn’t take long to realise you are not going in unless someone literally swims under you and tips you up. It turns out to be Great Fun! Brilliant! And the four of us have the best time! It’s such a beautiful day, the lake is as still as a sheet and warm (they might be stable but you do quite a bit wet) and it’s a perfect activity for us to do for a few hours.
We kayak around the edge of the lake to Fintry Provincial Park and the tiniest little lighthouse you’ve ever seen. We pull the kayaks up onto the shore, eat a snack and go for a swim. With temperatures around the 30 degree mark (not the water temperature of course – it’s warm but not that warm) it’s the perfect thing to do.
Back at the resort, with the aqua park to ourselves again, we swim and kayak around, making use of the floats and the slides. Steve sends Matthew flying into the air several times as he jumps onto the inflatable arm – Matthew perched on the

In the afternoon we play more tennis and swim in the pools and read beside them. And then, after a meal, we play crazy golf, especially crazy because the last few holes are played in the dark.
Later we experiment with pictures in the dark. The stars are out in full and we make the most of it. A rather perfect day.

It’s tempting to do the whole kayak thing again today but there’s a part of us that doesn’t want to tempt fate – yesterday was just perfect – and there is also a part of us (namely our shoulders and arms) that are feeling the effects of several hours paddling. We also have tiny blisters between our thumbs and finger from holding the paddle! Not that we’ll be sticking to dry land though. It’s another 30 degree day today so we’ll spend plenty of time in the water.
We don’t stray far from the resort though, beginning with a dip in the pool and an early lunch relaxing on our lovely comfortable deck for a while.
Then we head off to Fintry Provincial Park,
just 5 minutes down the road, where we climb up a seemingly never-ending wooden staircase up the side of an impressive waterfall.
It’s a short walk and a short outing but we feel like we’ve achieved something and back to the resort we head, ready for another dip in the lake and messing around on the floating pontoons.
After which we enjoy another round of crazy golf and a bit of volleyball and badminton before heading back to our cottage.
We get the sense that the resort is starting to fill up a bit and wonder if this weekend could be quite busy with people making the most of the excellent weather before it comes to an inevitable end.
We’ve made the most of our time here and think we may have timed our departure well. If the crowds should come tomorrow they may be lucky enough to get a couple of days good weather but the rain is coming and the temperatures will certainly be dropping.
Tomorrow we head back to Vancouver for another week (or best part of anyway) of city living.
