Logging show 1
This is hard work. Start to chop out a groove and then stick a plank into it to act as a platform and then chop the top off a log. Apologies if the groove and plank are not the correct terms. Back down from the mountains and an increase in temperature. Kamloops in July is hot! hot! hot!. Time to unwind and Gary (Fluffy to his friends) to get a haircut. We had the opportunity to see a logging competition. Men wielding big, sharp axes at huge logs for fun and all sexes flinging similarly large axes at targets. Scary stuff! Seeing the double edged axe miss the target and career towards the cars parked nearby. It is certainly a jaw dropper.
Monday found us in the heart of Vancouver, staying in the Cambie Hostel in Seymour street, a great location, but the rooms and shared areas are small and the room was above a bar. It has a great bar underneath which produces nice food but its on a noisy main street so unless you are like me and can sleep through a volcano, be prepared to have an interrupted sleep. Vancouver is a nice town with some beautiful areas but some like any city has some run down areas and a homeless problem. It was an experience trying to walk to Chinatown from out hostel. Gastown was a great night out and had some nice bars etc. We had a great
North Vancouver - Capillano
Capillano Suspension Bridge was a bit wobbly and pretty high up. time walking round Stanley park, playing pitch and putt and having a treetop adventure in Capilano (N. Vancouver). Gary was extremely brave and even managed to conqueror his fear of heights and walk over the suspension bridge - twice!
Our first mission was to get to the Indian consulate for a visa or the last part of the holiday would go pear shaped. We managed this but found out that we needed to pay an extra fee as we had a non Canadian passport and they would only accept a money order. Most banks in Canada don't like to give these to non bank member (apparently) so after a frantic run around by Lovett we finally got all we needed with 5 mins to spare, only to find we had to leave our passport in Vancouver for 5 working days i.e. next Monday and we had planned to be in Seattle by then. A quick rethink of the plans and a ferry crossing and we find ourselves in Vancouver Island - which is beautiful. The original plan was to stay in Qualicum Falls area but as this had no showers or water and we were going to be there for
Whale Watching -2
Honest they are Orcas. It looks closer from the boat. 3 days it was not the best choice.
We eventually stayed in Victoria (south of the island) and were very lucky on our whale watching trip to see about a dozen Orcas (unfortunately these look like log in water in the photos). You cannot get that close unless they opt to come to you. This was not the case for us. We are back to camping on Vancouver Island but it is cheap and the facilities are good. Our campsite has an old railway line running through it, or so we thought after using it as the most direct route for coffee in the morning. It was certainly a surprise when a train came along it at 0815 hrs blowing its whistle and horn. I supposed we should have asked the locals.
Had a great walk in Goldstream Park outside of Victoria, but of course got lost and had to hack through the bush to get to a campsite, we could see in the distance.
We are missing the old country - England (in a small way) - but made up for it by having fish and chips at Fisherman's Wharf . Very nice and a bit up market as
Logging show 2
More chopping logs. we had Halibut. Craigarroch castle was a little disappointing, as it is really just a house, although ornate, it is still just a house.
Back to the Indian High Commission in Vancouver, tomorrow, to retrieve our passports and then back to the USA (Seattle) for the next few days.
