An Amazing site.
One of 40+ different underground cities in the area of Cappadocia in Middle Turkey. This city has 8 different levels and could house 20,000-30,000 people, depending on how cramped they would be prepared to live.
An amazing construction job with evidence of rock usage - circular tools, holes in the rock both small and large and the doors. The Circular doors can only be closed from the inside suggesting that maybe the inhabitants were hiding from something.
There was a great ventilation system that used air pressure to create a movement of air from the surface to the bottom and up again through the network of tunnels.
A curious thing I noticed was a small step next to one of the storage containers, possibly for children or tiny beings of some sort??
One of these underground cities, Derinkuyu was featured in the excellent 'Ancient Aliens' series (Series 2 Episode 4) made by the History Channel, a great place to start research of the subject. Robert Schoch has done some work on these cities and funnily enough I bumped straight in to him whilst walking around Kaymakli.
