Town of Guzelyurt, a town that was part of the Greek and Turkish town swap
We stayed in Hotel Karballa, which was formerly a monastery, the Gregorian Chant was was developed here
Shirley's and my (alcove) room inside the former monastery: while we fit up the many tightly coiled staircases to get to it, our luggage did not
Guyzelyurt as viewed from the top of the cliff (which a little local boy led me up to show me a 4th century church in a cave at the top of the cliff)
Curbside conversation
After the cermony for a Greek & Turkish wedding ended, the whole town turned out for a street dance, started by the men and eventually all but the very elderly were gyrating away
Talking with the town Iman (translator on left) to hear about Islam and village life
Walking through the roads of Guyzelyurt
Ischmael & Mohammed very proudly, with the 3 of us hand in hand, showed me the "important sites of Guyzelyurt" (bird nest, berry bush, etc..) and then walked me to the hotel
Daily life
Mevlana Museum in Konya. Rumi was born in Afghanistan, moved to Konya with his family, started the "whirling dervish" technique, and wrote 5 books on mysticism
Rumi's poetry & religious writings were mostly in Persian. Persia (now Iran) put great emphasis on calligraphy, so when Persia became part of the Ottoman Empire, so did calligraphy
Hadrian's Gate in Antalya
Aphrodiasis was an artistic, Grego-Roman city, which is only 10% excavated thus far. This is the theater of Aphrodiasis.
Pamukkale: the white plateaus are formed by the travertine deposits of calcium oxide
Swimming among the Roman ruins in the hot springs of Pamukkale
Angoras crossing our path along the Toros Mountains (a part of the Himalayan chain that stretches across Asia). The city name "Ankara" comes from our word "Angora".
Nomadic life (we visited this family)
Korkuteli (region of nomadic living) market day: cheese in a goat skin
Statue of Scholastica (she was the architect who designed the Roman bath system of Ephesus)
Library of Ephesus
