(h2)(b)Welcome to Bill and Carol's Senior Trip Abroad: Month 2!(b)(h2) (i)Yevash, Yevash(i) (slowly, gradually) has been the theme for this month as we continue to take baby steps toward acculturation in Turkey. Each day is packed full of surprises, minor setbacks, and tiny triumphs. This week, for example, Bill found a good berber (turns out that "barber" means "barbarian") and got a spiffy hai... The Simit man

A simit is a Turkish bagel. He comes around with the simits piled high on his head at breakfast time. He is putting a fresh, hot simit in our basket we dropped to the street.

We noticed that even though many women wear head scarves and dress modestly, they're often very fashionable as well

2nd month
Great photos! I love the twins wo came by your Turkish lesson! Everything sounds so great: the boat rides, the swimming, the bus to the village up higher, a place inhabited since 2500 BC! I am so glad Karen can visit this year. It is nice that you can take your time getting eased into things and the paperwork! Good thing you knew to bring your marriage license. Today I am making plum jam and rhubard chutney to can. Summer has finally arrived and with it the garden fruit and vegetables that are usually hear weeks sooner! There is an abundance at the p-patch! Dahlias are as vivid and gorgeous as ever! Regards, Denise

Thank you so much for doing this!
I love reading your blog and seeing your pictures. Sounds like you are very busy (and very brave!). One question, what is that green thing on the lamb kebap picture and who is your pink-haired friend?

Thanks for including the pictures! The combination of your verbal descriptions and the photos really gives me a sense of your lives there. What a pleasure to follow you.

Fun in the Sun
Thanks for the latest blog entry you guys! It's great! You are official legal residents of Turkey. You should try to vote! =) That food looks great. The way to start your day is a swim in the Mediterranean - Yes I'd say that's right. I was telling your story today, and it's a great one. The story seems to end with something like "yeah I don't know why more people don't do that" because I really don't. Good to see you have some visitors lined up - You all will have a blast. I think it's cool you meet Norwegian people. All is well here. Rowing lots of races and going fast and getting SportsGraphics pictures online of some - I'll direct you if there's a really good one. Have fun in the sun! You would not prefer the humidity of DC right now. Ted

It's great to get your info from Turkey
Carol and Bill, This is the first time I've gotten anything through this travel blog from you. Maybe it went into my spam folder earlier. I've put the address of this blog into my address book in hope of forestalling that possibility in the future. It sounds like a wonderful experience you're having. I look forward to more installments. Lucy

Adjustments
Dear Carol, You guys definitely have my admiration. I don't think I could ever face learning a whole new language at age 66! Even if I did have a degree in linguistics! Bully. Now you've met your match. Very good luck in finding a teaching position. That actually may speed up the language learning. Glad you found a mountain shangrila. Temperature here in Salt Lake is 100 degrees...so off I go to the mountains tomorrow for a hike at around 9 thousand feet. Definitely cooler. Some good things happening with my own work life here....finally. More about this as things gel. Thanks for the notes and the pictures. I open it right up. Love, Richard P.

great.....
also the lines at the tram booths are to apply for the new Halk Kart that we will need soon. You need a passport picture to apply and it is 8 TL per person. Maybe you know this before. You blog is wonderful though.

vicarious adventurers
Carol and Bill, We're loving getting to know Turkey - just a little bit - through your stories and pictures. I'm now craving watermelon and chai - not to mention a swim in the Mediterranean! Things are calm in the neighborhood. We haven't met your renters yet, but have invited them to the block party. We'll miss you. Can I print and share your photos?
25th July 2010

Pictures are for sharing
Hello Liz, Keith and Josie: We would love it if you share our pictures, particularly at the block party. Let us know if you would like to feast on Watermelon and chai on our balcony. We'd love to have you. As you can see from the photos, redheads have a special status here. Bill

Turkish soup and apple tea
I realize it's extremely hot, but have you eaten any Turkish soup? Also, you mention drinking chai, but do they drink "apple tea" in Antalya? That's about all we did drink while we were there, and we even brought some home with us. Love your blog....I laughed out loud about the Post Office. It took me "forever" to find one that was open so I could buy some stamps to send post cards home. Part of the problem was entirely my fault...I kept asking for the "Pee-Tee" instead of the "Pay-Tay." The only responses I got were shrugging shoulders and shaking heads, until one particularly bright young man responded in English "You mean Pay-Tay? Post Office?" ;-) Stay cool! Ann

We'd love to read about your adventure as well. We are thinking about you.

Apple Tea in our future
Hello Ann: Thanks for the tip about Apple Tea. We just came back from Elmeli, (which means apple town)where they grow many of the apples for Turkey but we didn't hear about apple tea. We will look for it! The local PTT is more of a location to pay your utility bill (like the tram stop)and receive your government pension payment. Mailing a letter is definitely a secondary activity. However, we just did get our Washington State Primary ballot to be mailed back by August 18. All elections in Washington State are by mail so we fit right it!

Fast Response
Carol and Bill-Well that was fast! Only days after I requested more pictures, here they are! I love seeing all the local color-fabulous pictures. I can just see Bill dancing and swimming with complete abandon! Taulby took me for dinner on a yacht in Paris for our 10th anniversary-it was very special as I am sure your's was. Happy Anniversary! Thank you for sharing. Love, T

eating in turkey
I love to hear about your meals and shopping for food. My favorite kind of food...I just got back from our family vacation to the South and Buffalo with some kind of intestinal bug and since I can't eat much I am living vicariously through your meal descriptions! Keep it coming....Laurie (Elder)

Thanks for sharing
Loving the pictures and the descriptions - the best part of actually moving elsewhere is how you are forced to and hopefully delight in shifting both your actions and your thinking. It all sounds lovely and yet I'm sure is sometimes exhausting. Hope you continue to find the balance in swimming in the Med and standing in long lines :)

Loved the "simit man"
Karol and Bil, We love reading your blog and seeing the pictures of your flat and of your activities. Sounds like you're settling in to life in Antalya quite well. I especially like the story and the picture of the "simit man". We just got home from our reunion trip, so that's why we're late reading the latest. Love, Dick

Keep the info rolling in.
Hi, I just scrolled down far enough to figure out that I can comment. Sounds like you are having a really interesting trip. Maggie and I might visit next year if you are still there. Love your entries- Take care, Judith

Hello again!
Tom and I still following along, as is Alison. I have to say how organized you are to take your marriage license with you. I guess they thought you liked each other so much you were suspect. :) Love the photos but none of you this time Cousin Carol so that was disappointing.

What an adventure!
Bill and Carol You have a lot of would be travelers living vicariously thru you. Oh the pressure :) Phil
10th August 2010

Pressure Relieved
Phil: The only pressure I feel is when I don't hear from folks, so thanks.........and how about not being a "would be" traveler and come to see us! You would be right at home. The weather is very much like Tampa Bay.....and the Football stadium (Futbol Stadiyum)is right behind our Flat. Come feel how much saltier the Mediterranean is than the Gulf

I love your blog
Thanks for all your wonderful news and pictures. As you know Carol I'm a late and slow arriver to electronic communication, but I'm changing. I think your temporary move to Turkey is so cool. We are all well. I found the picture of Kate taken in NM when she was about three and I have it in a special plac(on my desk) where I won't lose it again. I'll send it to Kate or you when you want. Rob has survived the bladder cancer and is doing great after two years. Rob (Taylor) and his family are doing really well in Ruidoso, where we spend lots of time. I'm still doing part time work at the Mescalero Apache School during the school year. About 4 days a month. Life is great. Much love.
