After I found out the trip to Lebanon is next weekend, I decided to go to Aleppo this weekend. A couple of people said they might go but then backed out so I decided to go alone anyway. I headed out on Friday around 11am. It was a little later than I had wanted to but what's a guy to do. I got a taxi to the bus station and got a ticket for 100 Lira, or about $2 for the 5 hour trip. When I got on the bus it was hot, cramped, and uncomfortable. :( Anyway, after a long trip I finally arrived in Aleppo but then spent a couple of hours trying to find a hotel that had rooms and was in my price range. The last one I checked before I was ... read more

Geo: 36.1498, 37.5119We had a late start today, which was great as a I got a sleep in. We walked through the bazaar to the city's castle. It's a pretty good castle, surrounded by a moat. Inside there are roman baths and a secret passage. From up here we had a great view of the city. We had lunch near the castle, it was crap. I ordered a hamburger with a dried, thin meat patty. Just ate the chips. Walked back to the hotel to check out my new room. Very similar to my old one, I just can't understand why I had to change rooms!Went for a search around Aleppo- the town with hardly any ATMs to get some cash. Found one but it couldn't process my request, which is annoying. Will keep searching later ... read more

Geo: 36.1498, 37.6302We woke up to the beautiful view of the castle and jumped on the bus. I got the back seat, put my feet up and settled in for my sleep. A few hours later we arrived in Aleppo. It is a big city, feels a bit like Cairo and we were staying in the heart of the city, in the middle of the bazaar. The bus couldn't drive to the hotel, but there was a ute to take our bags to the hotel for us. We saw them roughly through the bags on the dirty ute. There goes all those delicate souvenirs!! After a few minutes of walking through the bazaar we came to our hotel. Our rooms weren't ready, so we had a brief tour of the city. Fahed walked us through the ... read more

Here's a helpful hint to start our first blog update in a month - the next time you're in Istanbul looking for an Iranian visa what ever you do don't try to find it in the Iranian consulate cause it ain't there! And if you should ever bump into Mr B from that consulate (bad form to mention his full name but Kiwis will get it when I say that it sounds just like what everyone gets at the warehouse) flee as fast as you can (but not before giving him a cheery wee poke in the eye from me) before he bamboozles you with ever changing rules and regulations cunningly crafted to make it well nigh impossible to ever enter his lovely country. NB: for those who need to know the Iranian embassy in Ankara ... read more

February 22, 2006 (Damascus, Syria) Shannon: From our current location, you can tell that we did eventually make it across to the Promised Land, or the country we call Syria. Who knew getting into this country would be such a hassle? After our failed attempts at the Syrian Embassy in Amman and our “storm the border” back-up plan, we were forced to move on to Plan C. We learned about this option from a fellow American we met at our hostel. Through a friend-of-a-friend sort of deal, he knew about an alternate way to get across the border: be invited. Evidently, tourism companies in Syria are able to secure you a special visa - I really can’t explain it, to be honest, because I still don’t understand it. Somehow the company makes you their “guest” and ... read more

After a well needed rest in Capadocia we set off again towards the hills. But it was only after about 3 miles when we had to stop because I had bike trouble, my rear mudguard again!! Luckily this time we noticed the real problem - the screw holding the mudguard and the whole pannier rack was about to fall out! I had obviously not done a very good check in Cappadocia. Still that sorted we were off. Passing very interesting villages cut into the cliff sides and getting more and more remote as we climb a gentle pass east out of Cappadocia. It felt good to be cycling again. My doubts were now behind me and I had fianally relaxed again about my ability to cycle stupid distances, since you only need to get to lunchtime ... read more

Aleppo, Syria. This is my 6th day in Syria. Spent the first couple days in the desert town of Deir Ez-Zur, in the eastern side of the country, with the Euphrates river running through the middle of town. I was pleasantly surprised at how friendly people are and how cheap everything is (comparing prices with Turkey, that is). People seeing me walking down the street would make me stop and drink tea with them, communicating with sign language and the few words of english they may know. Actually, the people on the street here seem to speak more english than their Turkish counterparts. The hotel I was staying in cost a whopping $4 for a single room (compare to the $10 I was paying in Turkey), had a really friendly manager, but no heating, which really ... read more

Aleppo was our first taste of Syria. I remember the first impressions where that all the buildings seemed to look alike, having the same gold sandstone material and giving an extremely homogonous feel to the city. We arrived around sunset, and would be leaving around lunchtime the next day. Not much time to check out the parts of the city left off the guided tour (basically anything to do with everyday Syria). Our hotel was very nice, but tucked away in a back alley that our bus could not get us anywhere close too. If my memory serves me right, we had to hull our bags around a quarter of a mile to get to the lobby. The place was great; Syria is the best value of all the Middle Eastern Countries I have been to. ... read more
