Walking I’m just back from a very interesting weekend in Wales. I walked in the mountains and explored the valleys. I went with my company’s walking club. In an infamous incident on 21 October 1966, 144 people were killed (inc 116 children) when a slag heap collapsed and destroyed the local primary school. These are the graves of the victims. Very moving.

Forty years ago, nobody cared about an unstable slag heap near a primary school. Now, people worry about gravestones falling over. Aberfan, Taff Valley.

After the disaster, there was a huge donation of cash from a sympathetic public. Much of it was robbed by the NCB to pay for clean up. I was interested to see this donation from South Africa, then a pariah nation at the height of Apartheid.
