Arrived in surprisingly sunny scotland today after a beautiful drive through the north of england. on the way up we decided to join the Da Vinci trail and visit rosslyn chapel. I stupidly imagined it to be exactly how it is in the book. Perhaps i just missed out the part of the story when the fella has to pay 7 quid to get in, and the part where he admires the corragated iron roof and the scaffolding. In the little booth where you pay they had displays over the walls showing pictures of the chapel (pre Dan Brown) and the history of the place which was really interesting. the fella kept asking if we were coming in- 'Yes in just a minute!'- but after we had pretty much seen all that was inside anyway, we barged back through the throngs of foreigners and away! We carryed on our merry way up to the campsite. Our campsite was brilliant (well as brilliant as sleeping in a field can be) and was run by a loony scottish women. After we arrived and pitched our little temporary house we jumped in the bat mobile and headed to the Falkirk Wheel. This is a spectacular piece

We particularly admired the original ancient tin roof...
of engineering that I just could not understand! Thom went storming off ahead with me trailing behind hanging on his arm-" But thoooom I dont understand!!" After reading all the displays and watching what actually happened I FINALLY got it. Apparently there is two canals which run roughly parallel to each other and were joined at one point be about 17 locks. The ole bargees got a tad fed up of it taking forever to get between the canals so decided to club together and build this wheel ( not the official story.) Anywho.. when the wheel is upright, one boat from each of the canals sails (do barges sail?) into each of the ends and it then turns, then off they sail into the sunset. Easy peesy. So we watched this a couple of times, had a cup of tea and a caramel slice and then headed back to the campsite. Just chilled out that night, whinging about the midges...little did we know the worse was yet to come!

So what has the chapel got to do with the Da Vinci Code book? And to make the picture of you in front of the rock complete Thomas all you need is a GTFC shirt. And how come you haven't been to GY yet on your travels? So much cultural waiting for you there. There's the National Fishing Heritage centre to name just ONE place!
