It’s grim up North … or so the saying goes! The reality is of course a million miles away, with more and more people finding out for themselves. We’ve been to the places on this blog more times than we could ever recall - but very rarely with a camera.
York itself is a mix of the medieval and shops - a place to stroll and get your self a bargain Mulberry at the factory shop, visit the Minster, the Castle or the Jorvik Museum if that is your thing. Alternatively, find a hostelry serving the excellent York ales and wile away the afternoon.
Whitby suffers from a West Yorkshire invasion on a fairly regular invasion, which can make it a bit claustrophobic at times. I always used to feel that way when I had the misfortune or fortune to work there for a period - there was it seemed at the time no escape. The escape is obviously seaward, which for many was and is the only way to make a living. The most famous I suppose is Captain Cook, as he went to find fame, fortune and a strange land across the oceans. The
Whitby
Tate Hill and the Abbey west side has all the amusements - the east side the character. Treat yourself to some kippers on Henrietta Street, count the steps to the Abbey and take your pick of the fish and chips - some with glowing reputations and astronomical prices to match.
Newcastle - a massive transformation from the city we occasionally visited as kids. It was a scary concrete jungle from the urban planning nightmare that was the 1960’s in those days and now it’s a vibrant happening place with art galleries, riverside apartments and boutique hotels! There are things that don’t change mind - silverware still eludes the Magpies. You could be anywhere at Metro Centre, so check out the shops in the city. However make sure you save enough funds for your big night out - coats not required!
