We headed off early today - I think we’re finally over our jet lag! First stop this morning was Reepham, and St Mary, the church my 3G grandfather was buried at. The church precinct had 3 churches all built on to each other, and all with different saints names! The churchyard however, was not arranged in any order. We searched unsuccessfully for Matthew Fuller’s grave but I was able to enter the church he must have attended.
whilst in Reepham we thought we’d try to obtain some demineralised or distilled water for my cpap machine. We asked at both the pharmacy (yes, today we found one!) and at the hardware store, but neither stocked it. At home we buy it from Woollies, but their Tesco don’t have it either. So I guess we’ll have to continue with tap water, poor Gloria. I would find it hard living over here with the grocery stores they have - we are fortunate to have such choices.
We continued along the narrow lanes, making our way to Beetley, and the St Mary Magdalene church where my 5G grandparents, Peter Eke and Frances Dorly we’re married. It was a really nice church, but it was locked,
so I couldn’t see inside - so then we continued on to Dereham and the church of St Nicholas, where my 5G and 6G grandfathers, both named Peter Eke, were baptised, my 7G grandfather, Francis Eke and 7G grandmother Mary Lance were buried. Once again the church was locked, and the headstones far too eroded to read.
By now it was almost lunchtime, so we thought we would go to The Coachmakers Pub and Kitchen. We pulled up in the carpark out the back and as we emerged from the car a lady stuck her head out of an upstairs windows and called out to us. The pub didn’t open till 2pm!! So we continued along our way to the Norwich Aviation Museum where Tom spent some time wandering amongst many planes in a field.
Just after 1pm we entered The Black Swan at Horsham St Faith, only to be told they‘d finished serving food, so we continued on to The Longe Arms at Spixworth where we were told they weren’t doing food at all at the moment (not sure if it’s post covid or still the off season). So we drove on and found The Fox Steakhouse (and
pub) - yay, lunch was found! I selected the only dish on the extensive menu with vegies - sausages, potato, peas and gravy.
After our lovely lunch we drove on to Aylsham where we stocked up on more groceries and then continued on to our cottage, spying pheasants running and hiding in the hedgerows.
We decided to do a load of washing, to give it a couple of days to dry before we have to pack and move on. And quiche for dinner!!
Oh and I forgot to tell you about the amazing toilet at Changi airport! As I approached the cubicle door, the toilet lid opened, lights came on in it’s bowl and it sprayed itself. When I’d finished it flushed itself, gave itself a secondary spray and closed its lid! Amazing! It’s a long way from the hole in the floor that horrified Shannon back in 1995.
