If a person in modern times is put in awe of this space I cannot imagine what a peasant of 900 years ago thought.

They started the rebuild at the crossing tower and worked their way towards the surviving west front. Despite their best efforts with the tools of the day the masons found that the nave had deviated in alignment.... imagine that conversation with the bishop and mason when the error was discovered.
