Not too bad. The whole process has been outsourced to another company. Bit of research from Si H helped "I went along to the Indian embassy and had a chat. Thankfuly it help remind me of what we can expect ... lots of 'yes's'... little information and a scrappy bit of paper. the gist of all this was that the following web site is the one to use, victoria the place to go, and you can indeed do it all on-line ... should take 3 working days... however, as you might be aware there is the odd postal strike in london, and I would therefore recommend in person or special delivery both ways!!!".

Mike G - drop off 25/09 - just under 2 hrs, pick up 30/09 - 15 mins if you leave it late.
Dave Charles - drop off 29/09 - 50 mins, pick up 01/10 - 40 mins - "Got me visa - not bad"
Mark J - attempted drop off 02/10 - but office closed Mahatma Gandhi's birthday - Indian Bank Holiday. Never mind only took 4 hours and 45 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Need a stiff drink.
Simon H - drop off 05/10 …….. went to Old Street site (clever!) in hope of shorter queue. Managed 2 hrs, why so long when I had an appointment arranged two weeks ago. Just got a smile and said it would have been longer if just turned up! When is the best time to pick up - she said ‘after 3.30, but it might not be quicker then’!

Success ranked by shortest wait time:-

Dave C - total time - 1 hr 30 mins (Victoria)
Mike G - total time - 2 hrs 15 mins (Victoria)
Simon H - total time - 2 hrs + pick up (Old Street)
Mark J - total time - 4 hrs 45 mins + pick up (ouch) (Victoria)
