School is out for the day! I'm on the train to London for the Queen musical, and I'm
SO excited!
At St. Pancras International Station, I switch to the tube system, taking the long escalator down. I love the posters that line the walls on the way down, advertizing the latest West End show. I love the wind as I rush through the corridor, winding around, walking quickly now with the flow of foot-traffic. Anyone who is experienced with underground trains knows what I mean. Those wind blasts that never cease in certain spots of the station. It's the wind of the Underground.
I take the Tube to Tottenham Court and the train is so packed, we're literally rubbing against each other. As soon as I walk up the steps onto the street, again I'm overwhelmed with love for this city. People, people everywhere! The sidewalks are packed. We can barely walk! Luckily my theatre, the Dominion, is right in front of me. I decide to find a nearby restaurant for some dinner before the show. I walk a couple of blocks and don't see anything but a Burger King.
So I walk back to the Dominion and go in the direction of the throngs of people. Quickly, I find a Greek restaurant called Dionysus. Stepping inside is quite refreshing. The loud noise of the city and the people pushing by each other immediately vanishes. I can see the Dominion Theatre from my little table against the wall. I feel relaxed and happy, and I have plenty of time.
I read the menu carefully and order some falafel with hummus, olives, and a Greek salad. It's soo delicious! I eat slowly, savoring every bite, thinking,
This is going to be my favorite restaurant. When I get to the theatre, the girl asks if I'd like to buy a program. Trying to decide if it's worth it, I ask, "Is anyone famous in the show?"
She laughs, "Um...I don't think so. Hahaha! That's hilarious! No one's ever asked that before."
I wasn't trying to be funny. I smile and say, "No thanks. But I heard that Brian May and Roger Taylor were the musical producers for the show, and Brian May helped write it."
"Yeah," the girl said. "Sometimes Brian May comes out, but not for every show."
I would F-L-I-P.
I take my seat.
THE SHOW BLOWS ME AWAY! The storyline is good, funny, and inspiring in a stick-it-to-the-man kind of way. It takes place 300 years in the future, after world globalization. At that point, all music is computer-generated, and no one is allowed to make their own music or be an individual in any way. The main character is a guy who is like "the chosen one" who will save the world. He finds a group of rebels--who call themselves the Bohemians and call him the Dreamer--and they make him their leader to create REAL music. The music kicks so much ass, it reminds me how
awesome Queen's music is. It sounds so good--the pumping bass, the singing guitar, the drums you can feel in your chest--like an actual concert. God that guitar is so strong and wild. I wish I could have seen Queen in concert. They'd probably melt my face off.
The last numbers are
We Will Rock You,
We Are the Champions, and
Bohemian Rhapsody, and it's like a freakin'
ROCK SHOW! We're all singin' along and clapping. I want to get up and dance. Glancing up at the balcony, I see that they are up and dancing. I wish it would never end.
I get home at midnight and think about how tired I'll be at work tomorrow.
But I'm too happy to care.
