Day 24 Grasmere to Carlisle 42 miles (746)

A rather grey and misty start to the day busy up Dunmail rise above Grasmere but by the time I reached the top the sun was starting to appear and it opened up into a fine day. A short descent before the cycle route followed the engineers' route around the west of Thirlmere - very pleasant and easy as the five or six miles had been engineered to be almost completely level! Some fine views across the lake and as the mist finally burnt off a view up to the summit of Helvellyn . After crossing the dam the route follwoed the B road up to Threlkeld , this time with emerging views of Skiddaw and Blencathra. A short but very pleasant section of the Coast to coast route which I had done 3 years ago , skirting the slopes of Blencathra on a narrow gated road to Mungrisdale where I had a pint with my sandwiches outside the Mill Inn . Following the lane northward the road climbed gently on to the Caldbeck fells before dropping down to Hesket Newmarket. Crossing the river Caldew there were dippers and grey

wagtails on the clean waters of this mountain river.
A predominantly downward slope hastened my cycling on towards Carlisle on quiet lanes. The rather industrial village of Dalston had a dedicated off road cycleway for the last few miles into Carlisle. At one point it featured the most absurdly over-engineered "cycle trap" I have come across - see picture-
Arriving at my hotel I was able to soak away the aches of the day in the hotel swimming pool which was very pleasant!
