Clueless
We think everything is great, so we pull over for a picture Today, we changed plans a bit. We decided it would be a little more pleasant to stay in a real bed in a warm building tonight. We did some laundry, packed up camp, and headed for a different region of the Alps. The day was far from how we planed it, but it was still a great adventure.
We were to drive a couple of hours to our next hiking spot: Maloja. We were starting to get the hang of reading the road signs and getting around. Everywhere we had been the local language had been German, but now we were south, and the signs were almost like an Italian language, and we got lost. We made a wrong turn early on and didn’t know so we kept following the directions because we didn’t know we made a wrong turn. The 4-lane highway turned into a two lane. The two-lane turned into a one-lane mountain road, then that turned into dirt. We traveled thru awesome small villages with great mountain views. We kept seeing yellow signs that had the name of our destination on them. What we didn’t know was these yellow signs were hiking guide signs! Never the less,
Small Village
One of the small villages we drove thru we followed them and headed down these dirt roads. The roads looked like the hadn’t been traveled by a car for a while and I thought, “this is one hell of a highway!” When the grass we were driving through began to touch the doors, we came to the conclusion that were lost. No problem, I got out my GPS to see where we were. I about crapped when it said we were in “Liechtenstein!” (A small country that neighbors Switzerland). Thankfully, as I zoomed in the GPS, it showed we were still in Switzerland, so we back tracked to the nearest village and asked for directions. We talked to an older man and he about fell over with laughter when we asked for directions. He pointed us in the right direction and we headed off. We found that we made our wrong turn at mile 10 in our 80-mile journey.
We were now on track. It had started to rain so we saw most of the sight from the road. We drove over some very high passes and saw some of the most beautiful countryside. We actually got snowed on as we drove over the second pass.
At about
Highway?
What the heck? 7pm, we checked into our hostel in Klosters, Switzerland. Klosters is another big ski town. The hostel was nearly empty. There was a total of 6 people staying here in the 95-bed hostel. We skipped dinner and headed to bed early. We were both beat.
Tomorrow we will be heading through the country of Liechtenstein and into Austria.
