Wooden horses, the world's smallest telephone museum and a kettle you can't make tea in The region Dalarna in Sweden is a somewhat popular travel destination, however not one that been visited much by us. We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden. We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. The finish for the ski race Vasaloppet

The largest cross country ski race in the world, Vasaloppet, takes place in Dalarna in March each year

Statue of King Vasa

The race Vasaloppet commemorates an event in Swedish history when Sweden was invaded by Denmark and the Swedish king, King Vasa, fled on skis through Dalarna

Gagnef Floating Bridge

A rather unusual sight we saw in Dalarna is this floating bridge. You can even drive a car across it. A few years ago someone tried to drive a heavy truck across. That was a bad idea... "If I just drive fast enough it will probably work". Famous last words.

Nedre Österfors Floating Bridge

This floating bridge is only for bicycles and pedestrians

Church boat

On Sundays when people went to church they did so by boat. When the church service was over the churchgoers went back to their village the young men who rowed the boats raced each other for fun and to show off.

A kettle

A so called kettle, a large depression in the ground which was created in the end of the last ice age

Painted telephone booth

In Tällberg we noticed a telephone booth which was painted in a similar style as the Dala horses.

The smallest telephone museum in the world?

To our surprise the phone booth was a tiny telephone museum. Most likely the smallest such museum in the world

Skräddarkvarn

An well preserved water powered mill dating back to the 18th century. The door to the mill has several over 200 year old inscriptions

Middle Ages themed festival

In Leksand we timed our visit to the week when they have their annual Middle Ages festival. We had more than one flashback from the movie A Knight's Tale when we enjoyed the various activities.

Statue of a corporal

This statue is a corporal who once said "Orsa kompani lovar ingenting bestämt". It can't really be translated but in Swedish this sentence is a very famous quote

A leap into a different world
What I didn't write about that bridge was that when we went there it was like leaping into a different world. It felt like we sort of went off the grid and got warped into a 1950-ies. The bridge in itself was part of it, they don't make bridges like that anymore, but the village at the end of the bridge was what really gave that impression. The streets were so narrow there that it feels like they predated car traffic. For a while we thought we were in an episode of the Twillight Zone. It really was a surreal experience. /Ake
