Back in Moscow ! I was met at the station by Andre, the driver that the ambassador was indeed kind enough to send. Yet again, another trip down nostalgia avenue. I am not going to bore you with stories of what has changed and what has not, suffice it to say that all has changed yet nothing has. My parents came to meet me here for the week-end and it was a most wonderful pleasure to see them again. We had a most wonderful 4 days: we did a monastery tour of Moscow until I reached an overdose point, went back to the red Square, the Arbat and all that I hold dear in Moscow. The city has improved for the best, the buildings have been nicely restored, the new ones could be worse, and there ... read more

Hi All, It has occurred to me that I haven't really included a lot of the things I've observed and thought about as they don't particularly fit into the "where I've been" model I've been following a bit, so I'm going to include here just some general observations I've made on everyday life in St. Petersburg. Women in Russia Women in Russia tend to work very hard. Whenever I've spoken with them they are nice and helpful and friendly. I was told that if I need help in the metro, I should go to a female worker because she would be more helpful. When I asked a woman on the street how to get to the Kirov, she went out of her way to help me and was delayed some herself. Although on the metro I ... read more

Man, am I good at titles or what? Hehe just kidding... I just can't be that inventive with them on a regular basis. So, the long promised account of the Museum of Government History (I think that's the name). This museum is in the Petrogradsky Region, which is the larger island 'cradling' the island of Petropavlovskaya Krepost (Peter and Paul Fortress). Originally, it was the mansion home of a ballerina, built for her by her lover. In revolutionary times, it was the Bolshevik Headquarters (I think they significantly expanded it). It has great displays on Soviet government and leaders. The way you move about the museum is rather reminiscent of Soviet bureaucracy as I understand it. :) You walk to a grand staircase, buy your ticket to the right of it, go downstairs to drop off ... read more

Hi all, Tried to post yesterday but I think my login timed out, and I ran out of internet time, so I couldnt rewrite it. Unfortunately I dont have the time right now to recreate it all. I'll come back soon to describe the Museum of Government History. Kunstkamera: Literally I am told this means House of Art. In 1697 Pete the Great saw an anatomical collection in Holland. Returning in 1717, he bought the entire 2000 piece collection.. It was all preserved organs and babies, etc. Because of this, I was reluctant to go. Luckily, this only occupied one, albeit very saddening, room in the museum. The rest was a fascinating display of anthropological collections of native populations of India, Asia, and Native Americans of North America. They have, according to J who lives near ... read more

that is, Menshikov Palace. Also, thanks to all who commented- I am grateful for them. I just didnt know I had to accept them for them to show up, so they should appear pretty soon. :) I loved seeing them. And I've decided to add a new little thing at the bottom of journal entries: Learn a Russian phrase, with a pronunciation key for Katien, lol. Also, I just realised that some of my spellings are off for the Russian names because some Latin letters are common in form with Kirillic letters. A lot of times I use a b for a v because that's what it looks like in Russian! I will try to do better, especially on words like samovar-- in russian, it looks exactly like CAMOBAP, but thats not how it's pronounced, lol! ... read more

Hi all! After language class today we were going to buy theatre tickets, but the kassa was closed, so we're going Thursday. Instead of taking the metro home however, we walked down the street next to it. We got to see some beautiful parts of Vasilostov Ostrov (Island) and got a beautiful view of the Neva. I love rivers in cities! I think sometime we're going to take a boat trip down it, but today it's windy and cool, and on the water it's always colder, so not today. We also saw the Sphinxes brought from Egypt. Beautiful, but also sad because they should be in Egypt. We walked along the Neva quite a bit, then walked across a bridge, ending up near the Hermitage. There was an adorable bear cub on a leash, but I ... read more

in the form of rain, to be exact. Hi all! a few interesting developments :). I'm looking into volunteering to teach English at an orphanage in St. Petersburg. Need to find out where it is (so I can know how to get there) but it'd be nice since one of my sisters was adopted from an Russian orphanage (though not in St. Petersburg). It'd be nice to be able to help; I just wonder how much Russian knowledge is required, lol. :) Also, if the kids are young, the way they speak Russian is a bit different from adults, and adults always diminutise words when speaking to kids (and I remember my sis using odd alternate forms for words- sobaka = dog. in Russian baby talk, it's sabashka. Kot or Koshka is cat; she went chasing ... read more

Logging in again from an internet cafe, this one just a couple blocks from the apartment Im staying at. I've discovered that my housemom is in fact at the dacha with her grandkids right now. I had expected this the second set of three weeks, not the first, so it's a bit odd to be living alone all of a sudden, especially since I've never had my own room before. Oh well. On the bright side, I do now know conclusively how the Metro works. Despite what any map says, 'red' and 'blue' lines (I think theyre numbered rather than colored, but oh well) are parallel lines; you take red one way and blue the other, so whichever line you take to somewhere, you take the other back. I also, due to my Slavic (Slovene) background ... read more

Hi again, I write today from Saint Petersburg, Russia! Looks like uploading photos in an internet cafe isn't going to happen, atleast not here, but I'll try to add them when I get home. I got in last night and was met at the airport by my housemother. She is very warm and nice. I think she likes me- I hope so anyway. Her daughter showed me the ropes of the metro today. It was packed and I am a bit wary-- dont hold onto your stuff and it'll not be yours anymore. But I think I can handle it. N and J and I got all registered at the institute. We are all studying Russian together; N and I are taking Russian history as well, and J is taking Farsi (would've been cool, but can't ... read more

Holiday on ice We didn't know what to expect when we walked up the stairs to the little wooden house in Severobaikalsk. For a start we just hoped that somebody would be home to open the door. We knocked three times and waited. After a while the 70+ female housekeeper stuck her face out. She had a puzzled but not unwelcoming look so we took heart: "Is Rashid living here?" He was and we were begged inside, "one moment, please." After about one minute a grey haired man supported by a crutch appeared in the doorway. We knew at once that he must be the man we were looking for: a former BAM (Baikal Amur Magistrale) railway worker and chess champion who had in more recent years gained a reputation as a tourism organizer in the ... read more
