My friend Alex, who is in the theatre in Moscow called on Saturday and wanted to know what I was doing on Sunday because he wanted to come to Obninsk to help celebrate "Pancake Day." That is not the official name, but everyone makes pancakes and fills them with calvar, fish, etc. and eats until they can not eat any more. And since we are talking Russia, yes, drink and drink until you can not drink any more. So Alex took the train, where I met him at the station and we made pancakes and stuffed them with turkey (I did not realize you were even suppose to stuff them with anything) but I had put a turkey breast in the crockpot with a great recipe using jelly, sugar, starch and cranberries. I figured the cranberries and jelly would go with the topping for the pancakes becasue they have not figured out what sryup is here...lol It all worked out well. We did not drink too much, but we did have a few toasts and then watched movies.
It really made my day for him to take the time to come to Obninsk to visit. Had I not been going
to TurkeyI figured he wanted me to come to Moscow, but instead he wanted to know if he could come to Obninsk. Now that made me feel like a real friend and I am feeling more like home. As of right now, some of you may already know, but I have extended my contract for an additional six months so I am now going to stay until at least January 2008. There is some great financial reasons to work for the entire year here in Russia and also it is not bad. It is still very different, but I do not mind the work.
Speaking of Alex, last weekend, I went to Moscow and we went to see one of the theater shows that was performing at one of the playhouses. It was about a clown and I honestly did not like it but it was fun seeing shows here in Russia at some of the famous playhouses. The picture is one taken by a "stupid American" who could understand Russian so did not realize they said no cameras or cell phones....lol I also do not know the significance of the snowpeople out front of the playhouse but it
was attracking a crowd.
If I am not mistaken, this is the same weekend I went to visit my Russian friends I met on the cruise. This was the second time I visited with them since getting back. They are nice, but they drink way too much for me. One funny story along the lines of drinking. Sasha was telling me how great this wine was and I should try it. So I agreed, trying to find something that I do not have to "shoot" and can just sip. I can nurse a good drink...lol Sasha wanted to know if I wanted any water and/or ice in with my wine. I declined and watched him fill a 12oz size glass up to about 8 oz of water and then 3-4 oz of wine. I thought to myself, what difference does the wine taste if you are going to fill it all with water...lol I was nice and did not say anything, but I sure was thinking.
Okay, I think that gets everyone up to speed on most of the things going on here. I will hopefully be a little quicker with my Turkey trip.
As I was
adding the pictures, I realized I had not put any on their from our Winter Olympics. Mom gave me this hat when I was home in Oct/Nov. and it was a huge hit. I had plenty of compliments (and comments) on it! It looks cold out there and if you just stood there, it was, but as long as you were moving, it really was not bad and a lot warmer than last year from what everyone told me. Since they have a gym, I am sort of surprised they did not have more of the events inside, but no, all were outside so you could drink vodka to stay warm. I can not believe that is what they think, but I was told that from plenty of people. But speaking of vodka, I drank more with the mothers who were trying to get me married off with their daughters than I did any other time at the Olympics. I did not drink much, but it was funny I was able to avoid it until I was being married off.
Have no fear, I am still single, but it was nice being fed and served...lol
