We woke up in our familiar airconditioned room with good beds and the huge private terrace. Once again, a well slept night in this room. Even though once or twice we woke up to adjust the air conditioner. We had the hostel's coffee+cereals breakfast and then started walking to the Augustine bus station to catch a bus to Tulcea. We got lost on the way just enough to miss the buss, but the next one left at noon, so no big deal.
We did some blogging and snack shopping at the nearby shopping mall before the bus left. Once again, the weather was extremely hot, but the bus had at least some kind of airconditioning, so the trip was tolerable. On the countryside we even spotted few men riding with horse carriages still - old style countryside life we thought we would be seeing all the time. There were lots of sun flower fields, which looked pretty, but otherwise nothing special to mention about the trip.
Once we arrived to Tulcea in late afternoon, we got a bit concerned because we didnt see anyone offering rooms at the station, and remembered our book mentioned that during high season there
wouldn't be a lot of free rooms. Anyway, our worry wasn't valid, because we found a great room (Donau view, airconditioner, good shower, good bed) for 120 lei (30eur).
The reason why we traveled to Tulcea was not really the town itself but the fact that it is a gateway town to the Danube (Donau) delta area. We have plans to take a full day trip to the delta for some relaxing river cruising and bird watching. We are supposed to be able to see pelicans, storks and lots of other birds. After we settled to our room we went to the riverside to talk to one business who arranges such trips for small groups with a small boat, and found a reasonable option.
Dinner at our hotel's restaurant was the worst of the trip. Leo had a steak which was totally dry and chewy, and I had pasta which was more like some kind of porridge of small spaghettis, mushrooms and tomato sauce. It was good to eat the starter salad, though, because it feels we hadn't eaten much fresh fruits or vegetables during the trip.
Tulcea itself didn't seem like a too bad town either.
It was a small surprise that it had quite much feeling of a holiday resort. Well, we mainly only saw the riverside boulevard were many hotels were located and people were strolling around in the evening. The athmosphere was anyway very calm and relaxing, which was nice. At the same time it seemed that Tulcea didn't have too good facilities for traveleres (and locals too), we had big problems finding an ATM and someone knew to tell us that there would be only one ATM in town and she didnt know where that was. Eventually we did find it and I'm not sure if it really was the only one, probably not.
Except for holiday town for tourist going to Danube delta, it also seems like quite a big harbor town. Lots of cargo ships go via it along Danube and walking around the riverside area you can see harbor cranes and big ships. So, even though not a seaside town, Tulcea also had some kind of seaside feel. Too bad actually we didn't have time to check it out more than we did.
Even though we are going to the delta and are excited to do so,
I can't help thinking if I like the idea too much that tourists are being taken by boatloads to see the nature reservate which an important bird habitat. But, tomorrow we will see how it is, and luckily I suppose only part of the delta is accessable to cruising or cargo boats. Btw, there are also around 10.000-15.000 people living in the delta area, if I remember correctly.
