Bom Dia Bo & Dud, Apart from obrigado (thank you) - this is the full extent of my Portuguese, and I’m not sure that the people understand even then what I am saying. Any road up, where were we? Thank goodness I keep a diary or I think we would have forgotten more than we remember. Before leaving Porto we decided that an outing was in order to follow the route of the Douro River - the Douro Valley is where the grapes are grown for the Port and Wine of the region. Again it was one of those ‘this is not what we expected’ experiences. We had a vision of mile upon mile of hand constructed, terraced vines - to infinity and beyond. No, not at all, the river valley is very steep, and the ... read more

Hello friends, It’s been a few months now since our last post, and we hope you’re well. For us the summer has been wild - trips around Europe, visitors from home, and various work related shenanigans. This is the first attempt to fill in the busy summer and give you a peek at what we’ve been up to. Thanks for your patience, and we hope you enjoy the pictures! With that preface, back in June (I think) we packed up our bags and traveled with Zsolt and Ildiko, our 2nd gazdas (host family) to Portugal. Why Portugal? It is where Chris’s brother Scott is doing research to finish his PhD in archeology. Scott’s been going there for several years now, speaks a good amount of Portuguese and has been tempting us with stories and delicious culinary ... read more

Another overnight connection from San Sebastian to Lisbon beckoned. My surfboard is becoming a familiar bed partner…much to the amusement of my three Chilean companions who I found sharing my compartment. Lisbon arrived nice and warm at last I thought. I found a bus across the other side of town to Peniche, a well known surf destination about 1 ½ hrs up the coast. I had arranged to stay at a camp ground on a help/exchange basis but unfortunately there was no work for me as the season had just ended which struck me as a little strange particularly as the surf just starts to get good at this time and the water is cold year round anyway. Nevertheless, Olly the proprietor had offered to rent me a tent for Euro 7.50 per night which I ... read more

Bom Dia(hello) Well we said you would be bombarded with blogs so here goes again, two in one week! So having headed up the Spanish west coast we decided to do a quick jaunt through the southern part of Portugal. Our first port of call was Quateria along the majestic Algarve coast. We did not realise that Portugal is an hour behind Spain, so of course we were an hour early for everything, which made a change. The town itself was pretty and we enjoyed a good stroll along the beachfront. It was a change from the Spanish-English coast and not so busy. We stumbled upon a fish market so we bought 1kg of large prawns, mmmm. That evening they were de-shelled and cooked in some lemon butter and of course some fine red to wash ... read more

Bom Dia Bo & Dud, Week 10 and we are ending the week in Portugal. On Tuesday we had 2 new experiences. Our first was catching a bus into Santiago de Compostela and getting back without a hitch; our second was finding a Spanish Post Office and buying a stamp to post a letter to Torre del Mar - success on both counts. So, Santiago de Compostela, the end of the pilgrim route - I’ve heard it said that it’s the journey that counts not the arrival, and speaking as one who enjoys travel I can acknowledge this. However, if I had walked the 100 km route that you are required to complete to earn the title of pilgrim, with nothing but a walking stick and a shell (slight exaggeration but all pilgrims seem to have ... read more

It had been 7 years since I traveled abroad. That was when I met up with my long time friend and traveling companion Max, in the unknown territory that was Eastern Europe. A decade earlier, communism had crumbled with the fall of the Berlin wall, and many former Eastern bloc countries declared their independence soon after. Czechoslovakia would become the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Many, including Hungary, would transition to a market economy. I had always wanted to visit Prague and Budapest, so when Max invited me to join him for part of his 3 month vision quest, I jumped at the chance. We spent 5 days in Budapest and another 5 in Prague. Despite the difficulties of trying to navigate ourselves around unfamiliar lands and foreign languages, we somehow managed to have a great time. ... read more

Tuesday 25th September Found a lovely little Net @ Kafe here in Albufeira, to escape the midday heat, you know. Actually its difficlt to find a wi-fi place here as they are all making too much money out of the fixed stations. This place is up beside the MacDonalds at the shopping centre and worth the trip. Anyway enough of the advert, not even getting a free delicious coffee !! We got here on saturday afternoon after a pleasent uneventful drive cown the motorway, avoiding Lisbon and the traffic. Main roads here are surper and signposts are clear and in English as well as Portugese which is fair enough I suppose !! Saw the match on friday bight before we left Foz. Got taxi down to little beach bar where it was being shown asked the ... read more

Any old Portugal and no storm. Sunday 16th Sept. Crossed the border into Portugal yesterday around five o clock, with a huge sense of joy and sheer emotion, happy tears flowed, we are here !! We have been to Portugal enough to know the welcome you could expect and it did not disappoint. Northern Spain to be honest we were glad to see in our mirrors, when I can borrow them from herself, just for a few minutes for driving like !! We had over nighted in the very nice fishing port of Luarca, which is about 70km west of Gijon on the northern coast of Cataluña. We have been using the Alan Rodgers camping guide and find it great, it rarely steers you wrong, which is a good thing as we decided not to replace ... read more

yesterday was an amazing day. We woke up to freezing weather to get on jeeps, and tour Lisbon. We made serval stops in the middle of nowhere, portugal to take some pictureque photos of cliffs, and fog. If I got descibe portugal id say it reminds me of san fransico. which in a sense its difficult to say that simply because Ive never been there. But from what Ive seen in the movies, id say its the same place. Tons of fogs, mountains, cliffs, the ocean....simply amazing. We didnt see any animals on this safari, but we did get a good look at a ranom man shitting in the middle of the street....The jeeps dropped us off in Sanatri which is a small town. Very european, small house, mountains, palaces everywhere very beautiful. We had some ... read more
