Day 2: Procession of Lamego
After our stay in the public park, we decided to visit the local supermarket for some bare necessities like campingaz to cook. For us nothing is far away, so we dicided to walk the distance....
Still walking....Finally we found ourselves a
supermercado were we bought our stuff. On the route towards the supermercado we saw a little sign for
Capella de Sao Pedro de Balsemao..So we thought: "Why not visit it while we're here?".
We started walking...again...30min....no chapel....1h....no chapel...1h30min....no chapel...1h45min...chapel closed on monday's!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Heading back intelligence struck us...so we thought...the thing is we were following the valley of the Rio Balsemao....in the mountains....and Lamego was on the other side of this valley, so we tried to cross it...Walking through a vineyard and olive trees finally reached the Rio Balsemao....crossed it and started our ascend through another vineyard guarded by apparently huge and dangerous dog, luckily on a leash!
Arriving back in Lamego after another 2h walk we were just in time to eat something dirty cheap, visit the not to spectacular Sé(Cathedral) and to find a spot in the blistering sun to see the procession. Beer is about 0,60€...in
combination with the nice and pleasant heat....I think you can guess the rest! The procession itself was nice but nothing spectacular....except maybe the massive crowd of Portugues that were reserving seats at noon while the happening was at 17h!!!! And the GIGANTIC oxes that were pulling carts.
After the procession everything that even resembled a party died out and Lamego returned to small town village life of hanging around the town center.
So we decided that evening to move on to Braga....
We rushed to pack up our tent so we could leave this mountain village. Did I mention that public transportation is very limited in Portugal after 22h? So we took the bus to Régua at 19h30...no prob here....taking the train to Braga on the other hand was! Only train available was to Porto.
We took that train halfway...got of and thought of hitchhiking the rest!
Lady luck was on our side because the stop we chose had a direct connection with Braga, but we had to switch once more with a to minute interval....really nasty change if your packing a load of 20 kilograms.....
Arriving in Braga at 00h00min we needed to
find the camping site wich we knew closed at 23h. Walking the distance....again....we arrived at the camping site at 1h30 just to realise that not only was it closed, it was locked down, shut....the only thing missing was armed guard and a searchlight....we arrived at a camping with a 2,5m high fence with gate!!! what to do? what to do?
Lets climb over it!!!!
Climbing over it and sneaking around like to soldier in enemy country we found a nice spot the end our day.....finally a change to sleep well and take well deserved shower
signing off with sunshine
