The Douro (pronounced Douroo) Valley is such a magical area and the Quinta de la Rosa, where we stayed, overlooks the fork of the Douro and Pinhao rivers where quite a few river boat cruise ships stop at the nearby town of Pinhao. The Douro is known for Port wine and like other regions in the world, such as Champagne, Cognac, Bordeau etc, there are strict regulations on making Port and a DOC designation is used for approved products. For example, irrigation is prohibited on Port vines and is actually against the law. Reducing the water forces the vine roots to penetrate the shale soil by as much as 30-40ft. The basic difference between Port and regular table wine is the addition of brandy which slows the fermentation process leaving a higher sugar content, therefore a ... read more

Friday, Oct 11 Well, we were all out front with our baggage waiting for our driver at 9:30 am. At 9:48 still waiting and then sent a text to our driver making sure it was a 9:30 meeting time. At 10:00 when there was no response I sent another text. Very unlike him not to answer immediately. 10:15 the group is still waiting so I had reception in the hotel call the travel company to see what was going on. They said they would call back as soon as they found out. Getting concerned for the driver who has still not responded. 10:38 still waiting so decided to try emailing the agent myself who had booked our group and tried phoning the van rental company but their help line didn't work. Actually got an email response ... read more

Day 3 - Quinta Nova Winery Hotel. Douro Valley We are surrounded by hundreds of acres of vineyards just starting to leaf out and it is raining and foggy this morning. We have been told that this region has 9 months of rain and 3 months of HELL, hot hot weather in the summer. It allows for perfect grape growing. We have been invited in a tour of the winery in about 45 minutes with the French family that are also staying here, grandparents, son-in-law and daughter, and two children, a toddler and an infant in a stroller. Brave folks to travel with kids. But they seem to be making it work.... read more

Thursday - Day 2 Quinta Nova Winery Hotel - Douro Valley, Portugal We arrived here yesterday afternoon from Coimbra after a beautiful drive through central Portugal. Stunning scenery, and it wasn't even totally sunny. The landforms remind me of Northern California, with lots of eucalyptus trees (imported from Australia that are harvested for paper) growing amid conifers of coastal cypress. The housing stock looks quite substantial and well taken care of. We went through only 2 or 3 villages, but there are a lot of folks living on the land in spacious housing areas. We stopped once on the 3 hour trip at a large Pronto station which had one person working it. It was huge though, with a restaurant attached. The roads were in great shape. Our driver Louis explained that the EU Stimulus Money ... read more

Have spent a couple of days in the Douro wine region which is famous for its ports and for having produced wine in the region for nearly two thousand years. Yesterday we spent some time in the morning hiking through vineyard trails. We had a 2 hour boat trip along the Upper Douro where we learnt a little about the vineyards. In the photos you will see differences in the terraces as you go up the hill. Originally vineyards were narrow family owned plots, see those close to the river's edge, then the terraces became wider and nowadays on the hilltop, flatter areas vines are grown in rows down the hill rather than across (note the different direction of vines at the hilltop). This leads to great patterns in the scenery. Late afternoon we headed to ... read more
