Our amazing find... after just two and a half hours!
Lost! Pods! Yoghurt! Saws!
We spent our first night in Vilnius tramping around in the rain looking for a new hostel after the first one we checked into had a totally smashed off lock. The girl at reception tried to tell us it was ok and 'everybody gets scared but nothing happens' - like hell! We got out of there smartish and eventually (after two and a half hours of trekking) found a really nice place with Japanese style pods instead of beds. The most comfortable beds ever! Until the sawing started. They were trying to get ready for some sort of exhibition and had decided that the best time to do all the necessary drilling and sawing right next to our bedroom would be 11pm til 4am. Logical.
On the upside, Vilnius is another absolutely beautiful city, with wide open squares (specifically at the Town Hall and Cathedral), cobbled streets, amazing churches and a castle on a hill presiding over the whole lot. The cathedral is a huge white grecian-style building with columns and statues, and a seperate belfry which looks like a lighthouse ight in front. It looks really modern but was built in the 17th century to replace

Such a beautiful location, and right at the bottom of Gedemino Prospektus
the original 12th century building.
Pilies Gatve is the main cafe/restaurant street, cobbled and winding throught the old town. It led us from our end of town down to the cathedral, castle and Gedemino Prospektus, the very modern, very chic new shooping street where we liked to while away a few hours a day in cafes sipping tea or melted chocolate (Michelle is such a pig)! Pilies Gatve is also home to the Amber markets which sell really pretty amber jewellery really cheap, and just up from there is Pegasus restaurant where we went for our final meal. It was a very posh place, with people sipping champagne and staring at us intently as we traipsed up the stairs in our hiking boots and hoodies. The food was fantastic though, and cost us only about 4 pounds per head.
We left Vilnius on an overnight bus to Warsaw, as another snow storm was brewing - we really seem to be missing all the white stuff.

Miss you lots
Hi Ciara, Claire and Michelle I love reading your news updates and e-mails and more than anything hearing Ciara's voice. I am so pleased you are all having such a fantastic time. Denise is looking forward to seeing you this week end and I can't wait to see you in salzburg in march. I have being going to skiing lessons but i expect I will still spend most of my time on my bum. Never mind it will be a change to be on the piste instead of on the piss. Keep up the good work. Love and kisses. Ciara'a Mummy xxxx
