(Day 17 on the road)After Vilnius, I went to see one of the most inspiring sites in Lithuania: The Hill of Crosses. Situated near the city of Šiauliai (pronounced shoo-lay, sounds a bit Asian to me) in the north of the country, the hill houses more than 50.000 (!) crosses. The tradition of placing crosses here dates way back (around the 14th century) and today is the finest example of Lithuanian defiance of foreign invaders. After the second World War, Lithuania was of course part of the Soviet Union. During the Soviet era, the pilgrimage to the Hill of Crosses served as a vital expression of Lithuanian nationalism and Christianity, which the Soviets were of course not keen on either. The Soviets thus repeatedly removed the crosses by levelling the hill and burning the crosses. However, ... read more

After spending a night sleeping on the worlds hardest bed, we woke the entire room with our alarm. By nine we were on our way to Siauliai (pronounced sh- ow- lay) on a rather rickety old bus. The journey was three and a half hours, so we amused ourselves by making up new rules to card games. We'd met an American guy on the bus who was also heading for the hill of crosses, so we went in search of the tourist information together. He wanted to get a taxi that cost 40lts but we wanted the bus at 4lts, so we parted ways. I think he was a bit miffed, but it was to expensive his way. We went to good old Rimi to buy food for dinner. We got stuffed bread, bananas, yoghurts and ... read more

One day we made a trip to the city Šiauliai in northern Lithuania. Outside this city is one of Lithuania's most remarkable places, the Hill of Crosses. This is a place we have wished to visit for several years and finally we now had the time to do it. In the countryside a few kilometers outside Šiauliai is a a place called the Domantai Hill, though it is known better as the Hill of Crosses. There are actually two hills there and they are practically covered with crosses. Nobody really knows when people started to place crosses on this hill. It is well established that the locals have used the place for worship and as a memorial for their loved ones for over 150 years. Wikipedia states that it is believed that this unusual way of ... read more

Leaving Vilnius; Siaulai Europe » Lithuania » Siauliai By carnellesApril 27th 2007Eric 27 April 2007: On the way out of Vilnius we visited the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, built in the 17th century and decorated by two Italians with over 2,000 reliefs on the interior. The details were fantastic. Driving along the A2, we stopped at the Burbiskio Botanical Gardens where the tulips were 3+ weeks behind the Skaggit Valley in blooming. And we saw storks nesting along the way. The Hill of Crosses, literally thousands of them, is a national moument it seems. In Siauliai, we passed by the new basketball arena under construction with a glass exterior that... read more

Lithuania has burst forth from under the yoke of several decades of Soviet oppression, to become a hot travel destination on the Eastern European backpacker trail. Formerly one of the three Baltic states in the Soviet Union, Lithuania joined the European Union in 2004 leading to a new dawn for this small country. The people are friendly, the food is good though somewhat artery clogging, and the capital Vilnius is a very attractive and clean city, having undergone a major transformation since independence was gained in 1991. The last journal left off in Krakow, dear reader, from where I took a four hour train ride north to the Polish capital Warsaw. I'd arranged an overnight bus trip from Warsaw to Vilnius on a service that does not run every day, but is by far the fastest ... read more

Hotel: Radisson SAS Riga +Trakai +Siauliai We got off to a slow start out of Vilnius this morning. We almost missed breakfast after sleeping in until nearly 10:00. The restaurant had tiled images on the walls of stylized Soviet workers. There was a basket of beautifully decorated Easter eggs sitting at the bar. The breakfast at the Scandic was Ok and had the basics of fruit, sausages, and Lithuanian pancakes (blynai or blintzes). We had planned to rent a car today and drive up to Riga via the Lithuanian towns of Trakai and Siauliai. I had made a reservation with Alamo but when we arrived back at the airport, not only was there no Alamo booth, but all the other car rental places were closed as well! Today (Easter Monday) was a holiday in Lithuania and ... read more
